Is the BC796D considered to be DIN size?

Hi guys, just wondering if the BC796D is considered to be a DIN size radio? I badly want to put it in the second DIN slot in my car! I had a double DIN radio and that was replaced with a single DIN radio and an empty slot that a storage pocket/tray was inserted into. I would love a BC796D to fit in there and I've done the measuring and it comes very very close! It just seems that it may be a fraction too high. Other DIN radios measure 171mm (W) x 95mm (D) x 52mm (H). The BC796D seems to have measurements of 176.5mm (W) x 167mm (D)x 61mm (H). This is very very close but seems to be just a few millimetres too big!? What's the deal!? If it won't fit, I might just have to wait for the Pro-2096 to come out so that I can put that radio in my car. Can someone please clarify this for me? I would hate to fork out the $500 to get a radio that is not going to fit in my car cos it's a few mm too big!!!!!! Arrrrgh uniden drives me NUTS!

My 785, which is exactly the same size as the 796, is to deep to fit the din opening of one of my cars but it's not to wide and the height would fit, though the top and bottom roles of information may be behind the escutcheon lips. But my other car will except the 785. I currently have 2067's in both, which is 170X140X50 size. And I use a Pro-92 v1 to keep them up to date. If the 2096 is not to deep and will clone with the 96, I'll replace one of the 2067's.

Yeah I measured my din slot today. At the absolute most I have 59-60mm in height and 182mm in width. Can't remember the depth but i'm sure it's deep enough. So basically Uniden made the radio a fraction too thick for a DIN size mounting. Bad move on their behalf I'd say...

I put a 785 in my Toyota Tacoma where the second din slot was; but I had to trim the area where the 785 would not quite stick thru the big plastic trim that is removed for access to the radios. It looks good but if I went back to 1 stock radio I would have to buy new trim. ($94.00 even after lots of kisses)

I bet some cars might not have have enough depth, though.

I don't know about the radio, but about depth - in order to mount my BCT-8 - I ended up cutting clearance holes for the antenna connector and power connector in the mounting bracket for the factory radio. So... even if it won't fit for depth - don't just give up. You may be able to do some minor trimming.

Years ago, to give an `idea' of what I mean by *years* it was in the early to middle '80s, I had a listing of the various "DIN" sizes that automotive `electronics' came in. *One* of the things I *definitely* recall was that there were *several* sizes that were *very* close to each other being only off by a few mm in one dimension or two. There were also a couple two three that varied by about a cm or so, too. The `scarry' thing was that, *if* I `disremembers prezactly I think', the danged list was about two to two and one half *dozen* different sizes long. (I wish that I, or someone else, could find that old list!)

Now... The main `purpose' of mentioning this is that I'd *almost* `bet' that `UniHeave' designed their units around *that* list because I've noticed that *some* of their so-called `base/mobile', older ones especially, seem to be exactly what *I* remember as being the *one* `small' size that was on that list while it sounds like quite a few of the newer ones are one of the `oddball' larger sizes. (The BC-760/950xlts are the ones specifically as I remember doing, this was *years* ago, a whole bunch of `installs' for a couple VFDs locally and I had to order in some `adapters' to fit them to some of the firefighter's vehicles that I wasn't able to either just `hang' them or slip them into already exisiting spaces. I remember it because I `went several fast rounds' with the supplier I had at the time over them because they had them `listed' yet claimed that they didn't exist. I *did* eventually get them {VB GRIN!} *after* finally talking to the *owner* of the company! [At the time the company was basically *just* getting started and the *two* `order takers' were a couple high school students that were doing it as a `summer job' and the owner was letting his *wife* have a bit of a `vacation'. {CHORTLE!} Apparently even back then there was a `reading problem' in the school system as the owner was able to find them in their catalogs right away? {FROWN!} They have since grown a lot larger and unfortunately have gotten a lot less `user friendly' in the process. {DANG!}]) So... `UniHeave' may *still* be using *some* of those sizes to this day? Now... What with all the `so-called "standardization"' that we've seen over the years the `oddball' "DIN" sizes have probably `fallen by the wayside' every place *except* `UniHeave'? (For all *I* may know this could be endemic to *all* of the scanner makers and even the HAM radio makers, too. So far the *only* `gripes' about size *I* have heard have been with `UniHeave' but, I will also admit that I haven't been `keeping up' on HAM gear for quite a while and so can't `speak' towards any `problems' there. {WAN GRIN!} [ I know that, at least with the PRO-2067s, about a dozen or so, *I* have recently either seen installed or have installed myself, that they were pretty much `slip right in' and `snap the bezel' back in place installs. Since I am *not* `installing' as a `business' anymore I would defer to those who *are* doing such as a `business' as to whether ot not this is so.])

Well i went to the electronics store today and measured up their BC780... and unfortunately it turned out to be the 61mm that they said it was (this is excluding the feet sticking out the bottom). And unfortunately this just won't fit in my vehicle's DIN slot. Bugger.

Well I guess I have to wait for the PRO-2067 to come out. For the time being I think I might mount a UHF CB radio in the car with a built in radio scanner. The police over here haven't gone digital just yet, so I'll deal with that for the time being...
