The R75 is very good. I own this receiver. Many features with the R75. A tabletop HF receiver like the R75 is always going to perform much better than a wideband handheld receiver that covers HF to microwave, like the R20. Sure, the R20 will pick up HF; however, not near as good as the R75. One thing to do is to buy both the R75 and R20 if you can afford to do so. The R20 is very good on VHF/UHF.
Thanks for the info racin06! I think i'll take your advice and try to buy both of them, i'll buy the r75 first but i'll have to save a while to afford the ic-r20. I already have a radioshack pro 95 and a pro 2052 for regular scanning but i want to hear hf and stuff. If i could afford it I would love to have the ar5000+ but thats only a dream.

You're welcome. Yes, I hear the AR5000 is a tremendous receiver. FYI, I bought my R75 from Universal Radio. Currently, Universal is offering the R75 for $549.00 and that includes the UT-106 DSP which is a $139.95 value. Also, Universal is throwing in the Shortwave Listening Guidebook for free when ordering the R75. Check Universal out at www.universal-radio.com
I'm very pleased with my R20 on HF. I've used it to listen to ATC/Airinc from NYC & San Francisco, and also various US Mil HF-GCS stations. I'll agree that a desktop will outperform, but for portability I'm happy.
