Is there a radio....?

Is there a Moto radio that, when programmed, can access 2 totally different systems? One is a APCO25 9600bd system, the other is a type II. Both are 800Mhz though.

The reason I ask is Omaha's helecopter unit popped up on the Sarpy County system last night and called the Dispatcher directly to report a drunk driver headed their direction. Both her and the Bellevue PD units seemed very suprised they could do that. In the past, they've always had to patch Able-1 in before they could talk.

I suppose they could mount 2 radios in the helecopter (actually 3 or 4 by the time you add in the standard aircraft radios) but I would assume space would be a bit tight to allow that. I'm just wondering if maybe they replaced the unit (or reprogrammed it) to allow it to work on both systems.

Yes, the newer Motorola XTS series and Astro Spectra and XTL lines can do both 3600baud (APCO 16 ) mixed mode (analog & digital) systems and 9600baud (APCO 25) Digital systems.

Because of weight considerations, you don't load up an aircraft with a bunch of radios, especially radios designed for automotive use. Yes, they are sometimes used, but mostly radios designed for aircraft are used, take a look at this PDF file for an example.

Technisonic is another provider of aircraft radios. One box actually has 3 modified Motorola XTS3000 portable radios in it, a newer one uses XTS5000 portables.
