Is there AGC anywhere in the Pi image?

The setup is a WS-1040 with audio running into a USB audio interface into a Pi Zero W 2. I have ferrites on the audio cable. Audio is perfect when there is audio. When there's silence a ticking noise increases as if there's an AGC somewhere in the sound subsystem until it's very noticeable. Once a transmission comes through the ticking is gone. When it's done the ticking rises up.

It seems like there's an AGC somewhere but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Sometimes if radio is background monitoring a second channel “dual watch” as example there might be a tick heard during the switch back and forth. I’m not saying for sure, just a direction to check.

It’s just scanning through a p25 system, nothing very special. Something is increasing the gain because the noise fades in after each transmission. I dug through the install from the broadcastify image couldn’t find anything. It’s driving me a little loco.
