But, just because you see a name, doesn't mean they have compatible equipment or are on the air.
What might work better is to locate some repeaters (Amateur Radio (Statewide or Regional) (California) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference) or (repeaterbook.com) that are local to you and compatible with your equipment. Listen for any traffic, or throw out your callsign and ask for a radio check.
