I didn't really understand antenna gain until I found this article, even though its about Wifi antennas would the same principles apply to scanner and ham radio antennas?

Yes. Gain is gain. It doesn't matter what kind of antenna.
The reference unit (dB, dBi, dBd or something else) is what is important.
Also important is whether the gain figures were calculated, actually measured or just a marketing lie.
I didn't read the article so it may be full of BS.

Thanks for the reply's

I didn't seem to find any BS like their brand of antenna is better because of such and such. It just explained in simple terms of how antenna location works relating to gain and what gain is etc.
