I heard on the St Joseph PD a new ID 13 then after the trunk frequency number it says enc. When this comes up the radio is silent, so does this mean no more listening?
Thank you.

Encrypted

So is this what scanning is coming to, if so is it going this way everywhere or just here in St. Joseph, Mo. I know there is no way to listen to this, should I try to sell my scanner it was new in March. I don't know what to do, there is no reason to keep it if all is going to be encrypted. I just can't believe our little city has went to this I could understand a large city but not little St. Joe.

They can, the best way to answer that is look for the ENC on other talkgroups or ask them.

Thank you

I don't think I would ask them, I can see most of their talk is on this Tg 13.
I might sell this thing I don't know

I probably wouldn't get too worked up over having one talkgroup encrypted. There is always the possibility of systems going encrypted, although it is expensive and unlikely to become a widespread phenomenon.

I rememeber seeing on the radioreference home page an entire county... i think Hall county, that went to 100% encryption. I really don't see the point personally, even in the roughest parts of saint louis and even east st louis, they don't use encryption, and i guarantee there are more seasoned thugs there than there are in hall county BFE.

encryption definetely sucks, i will give you that, but i wouldn't jump out of the hobby over something like that.

Also, unless you know someone on the force, i would advise against asking. Officers love to play dumb about things like that because they are happier not telling just any random person on the street about something so critical as their radio. It may sound a little ridiculous to your normal person, but cops have their own circle of trust, and unfortunately your average citizen doesn't fall into it. You'll find that... or the rest of the cops who just don't know a thing about radios anyway.

I know your right on asking them, I know a few myself all nice people but they don't talk about their work much to folks not in the profession & I don't blame them. But I am just wanting to know what is going on and now with this one Tg 13 all I hear is when they start to transmission. Then all I get is silence, you don't think the whole system will go this way?

If it hasn't yet, and since it only takes the flip of the proverbial switch, I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Just curious, but if you can clearly hear the first part of a transmission(i assume you hear some talking or a few words) could it be possible that you don't have your scanner programmed properly?

I don't live in saint joseph and have never looked at their TRS but was just wondering if you could pick up the first part of the transmission if perhaps it was just jumping channels and your scanner wasn't following it.

You might just double check to see that you have all the control channels entered in.

I think he means he "hears" that they are transmitting because the scanner might play a smidge of digital screech before the ENC mutes.

Ahh i see. Well i figured it was better to not overlook the "obvious" like missing a control channel or having a scanner set for a type 1 system when it needed to be type 2 etc.

I might have it set wrong ,that's for sure but the ENC comes on as soon as Tg13 comes on. This 13 is a new Tg I've been listening for 3 months now & just got this 13 last week. If I do have it programed incorrectly would the ENC come on? I'm not hearing the first few words just the noise of a mike being keyed & the first part of the first word not enough to even tell what the word is. I sure hope I have the system in wrong.

Also the Tg13 ENC stays on for a period of time & you can tell when one stops talking & another starts, its depressing.
