I was thinking, what if you could come up with an earphone jack that you could wire into your car stereo speakers instead of just getting a ext. speaker. Can this be done? Has anybody done this before. I would love some feedback cuz if it would work this is definately something I want to do in my car. I am familiar with the wiring of a car stereo, I just need someone with a lil expertise that could come up with a way to wire an earphone jack that plugs into the scanner and then have maybe a toggle switch to tap into the car stereo speakers and listen to my scanner in "surround sound". It seems pretty cool to me. What do you guys think? Anybody got any ideas? thanks!

Many aftermarket radios have "line in" jacks in them. You can simply use a patch cord to take care fo that kind.

You could also use an FM transmitter for a no woring setup. And then of course you could go the complicated way and wire in a seperate stereo jack setup to cut off the stereo from the speakers when a jack is inserted.

I sugges the FM transmitter. Simple, reliable, and you can have fun with the kids in thier Bass machines by blasting your scanner through thier stereo if they are on the right channel

Wonder what an open squelch would do to a set of speakers at full volume when amplified.

I've got an 01' Grand Prix and I still have the factory radio cuz it's the BOSE and I've never wanted to change it. This FM transmitter that you talk about I have never heard of. Where can I get it? store preferably. Can i still use this with a factory radio or does it have to be aftermarket? I really want to do this, if you can go into a lil more detail on how to go about installing, I would appeciate it.

No...but you would have to find a way to shut off the stereo input into the amplifier final,or are you wanting the stereo to drive the scanner audio also?
hmmm.....I suppose it could be done, but something would need to be done about the stereo feeding back into the small scanner speaker,(blowing it) while listening to the stereo. You could sail into some uncharted territory, depending how much power (amp)we're talking about here.(I don't know, but it seems like it could damage the scanner)

Store = Best Buy / maybe Walmart etc. Pretty sure the brand is Belkin. All you do is set your (ANY) radio to a freq that is shown in the directions. The unit transmits the signal from the scanner to the radio antenna and Kapow, it comes over your car system. Price = ?$25.

Yes - it's called a CD to cassette adapter. It's got a plug that plugs into the scanner's external speaker jack and a cassette looking device that you put in your stereo like you would any cassette. Many people have used them for scanners.

There is nothing different between the external speaker jack on a scanner compared to the external speaker jack on a CD/MP3/cassette/AM-FM player. The scanner will only have audio between 300-3000 Hz as opposed to 20-20,000 Hz, but that jsut means it won't sound as good as your CD player will.

You could do the same thing with a line in on a stereo or one of the 'irock' type FM modulators.

Lets see, you can get them at , WalMart, RadioShack, Target, BestBuy, Circuit City, etc.

The transmit on the FM broadcast band, so any FM radio will work.

You dont have to "install" them, just plug it in.

Yup! That is what I have used for a number of years with a couple of different scanners. Also works with a SW radio or any device with an earphone jack. Volume is of course greatly improved and the sound comes from "all around" rather than from a small area on the seat, etc.
Now - if you are one of the many people that got a newer car with a factory CD player and no cassette tape player, well sorry 'bout that. :p

If you are familiar with car stereo wiring you would know that it is a no no to use a toggle switch inline with your speakers. I would use some of the other suggestions given so you dont blow up your stereo 8)
