Why ignore it? This is the first I've seen of this "toy", now I HAVE TO HAVE IT!! But I see its $795 at ScannerMaster with an optional $100 external antenna. Whew thats a lot of $$. But seeing how that is only a fraction of the money I've spent in scanners and computer hardware over the years, ITS A BARGAIN!!

So now I just have to convince myself I NEED it. Well, I didn't treat myself to anything at Christmas this year, so...

For anyone who uses this thing, does it track REAL time or is it on a delay for security purposes?

I have an SBS-1. Very cool item. It's neat to see all the approach/departure patterns etc. I was surprised to see how high a lot of these bizjets fly. They must have a great view way up there at 50,000 ft. It's amazing how fast some of these jets can get when there's a good jetstream blowing too.

I highly doubt that any flight tracker displays in real time since all the trackers I've used over the past few years are always 8-10 minutes behind. All I listen to are ARTCC high sectors and I always hear the aircraft on the scanner long before I see it displayed on the screen. I tracked the Indianapolis Colts charter (NW 9963) from SAN-IND early this morning and it was shown as being on the ground eight minutes before I saw it disappear off the screen.

Mark, the system works off of ADS-B technology that is transmitted by the aircraft, so yes, the information is REAL TIME as you are receiving the data with your hardware just as aircraft and ATC centers equipped with similar devices are.

for around $500 or $600 I hope that it would be real time tracking
thats gotta be the best tracking there is, not internet for tracking for a delay, receiving the direct broadcasts from the aricraft

I've had my Radarbox for about a year and I love it. Yesterday, an alert popped up on the screen saying that a Quantas Airbus A380 was nearby. I watched it on the screen until it was nearly over my house. I stepped outside and watched it on its base leg into LAX. Most aircraft here in the US won't display on the screen since ADS-B is a "new" technology and still being implemented, but you still have Mode-S aircraft (more common) displayed on the list when they are in range. You still see a few bizjets, cargo carriers and most int'l air carriers are using ADS-B. I attached a screenshot.
The network feature has a 5 minute delay, but the RF portion is real-time to a gnat's a$$.:D

As far as the ACARS decoder, the Radarbox does not have a built-in decoder, but it will interface with Airnav's ACARS decoder, which is an on-going cost.

Yeah, its a lot of $$$ for not alot of info. I'll hold off until MORE aircraft are actually using the technology. I've been waiting for something like this forever, but at a minimum of $600, it can wait. I'd rather buy a couple more digital scanners.

AirNav Radar Box

Yes it s the real deal and only will get better. I have one and travel with it all over the world. It interfaces with the AirNav ACARS program.

If you'd like to see the type information the RadarBox and SBS-1 Mode-S receivers can provide, check out the Sticky Thread for Milair IV in the Maryland forum. Several people on that thread have these Mode-S receivers. While you won't see graphic displays from the systems there, you will see the type information that can be reported by using one. I've been following military air for many years and feel the Mode-S receiver is, by far, the best tool ever made for that part of the hobby. Combine it with the information from your scanner and you've got a remarkable combination helping to visualize what you're hearing. And to confirm what was posted above, the Mode-S receivers provide information in real time - including for military aircraft. With just a radio/scanner, it isn't possible to monitor all frequencies all the time. Very often, Mode-S will provide the first tip that a military aircraft is in the area simply because it is looking at all aircraft, all the time - up to the range of your antenna system.

Would this work in Regina, Sk. Canada? Would be an awesome addition to radio room!

Yes, it does. I know several people running one of those units in Canada. You'll see what's within range of your antenna no matter where you are. Most of the world runs Mode-S in their aircraft. In fact, the U.S. is way behind many other countries in adopting it
