Planning a 3 week backpacking trip up there. Last time we had an "incident" and it took 2 days to get rescue for a backpacker with a broken ankle at Todd Harbor.

I cant find any info on radios up there. I know the rangers use some sort of VHF radios, but what else is used around the area as far as ham or marine channels?

EDIT: Planning a Windigo to Rock Harbor via minong ridge to chickenbone lake, then Greenstone ridge to Rock Harbor, then back along the coast to north lake richie, the along the greenstone ridge again turning south towards island mine, then making the loop thru Siskwit bay and Feldman lake back to windigo to catch the boat back to civilization...

In case anyone was wondering...

This is my favorite place on earth (when its thawed... middle of august is best)

I love the island as well, I'm not aware of any "radio" communication other than HAM. You know if you have a amateur radio, and license, you could call for help. Even a little 5w ht works good. But I would look into a personal locator, http://www.findmespot.com/Home.aspx . Even when there isn't cell, radio, or other coverage, these little things work. We had a case in Wilderness State Park. Northern Emmet County where a backpacker got lost on the trail, his cell couldn't get a signal (we love the north) but he had one of these little orange units. It worked well. There is a yearly fee but it's worth it of you do a lot of outdoors act.

Plus with most of the units you can have your path tracked, someone at home can see where you are and that your ok.

Have a great time on the rock !
