I agree. Same thing with a scanner. A portion of criminals listen to a scanner to monitor police radio traffic for malicious reasons, which is why lots of cities are encrypting their communications. A lot of times people find it suspicious when someone has a scanner because of this, which is somewhat reasonable considering their perspective. Like other members were saying, people who aren't into the hobby don't really understand.
None of this matters if you are being discreet; if the OP starts wearing an earpiece or earbud and conceals the scanner like many prior commenters suggested, it won't matter what anyone thinks about scanners...

A bit late seeing this thread but I became very intrigued on some of the comments and things said here, as I may be around the same age as the poster ill say what others have said and what I have done from DAY ONE when getting into scanning with handhelds.. out of sight and out of mind. I got into scanners and such around 2015ish when I was in middle school. I carried and listened to them daily through public school in middle, high school and my 2 year college. I had multiple sets of earbuds, one ear style headsets and even a small Bluetooth TX and headphones. I listened to everything from my own bus drivers, to security, public safety, aircraft, railroad and marine, military, etc. I kept my scanner in a bag nearby, covered by my shirt on my belt or covered over with a jacket. I never got stopped, asked or questioned about what I was doing by teachers, admins, security, costumers in a store or employees. The only one who cared was my professor in college who wanted to listen as well and hear everything, despite him being my professor we are close friends now that I have graduated and he has purchased several scanners himself. Out of sight and out of mind from day one! I never made it known or acted suspicious, I even had anything other than a phone. You don't need to be flashy about it, it creates accusations and false ideals about the hobby as a whole. As for some of the more colorful comments directed to the OP, id say cut him some slack but teach him how to do things right. There's no sense turning this into a legal battle, leave those for TV.
