• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recently got my GMRS ticket and I am attempting to legally purchase programming software for the Kenwood TK-3230. I've dealt with several Kenwood dealers who either tell me "these radios won't work with gmra [sic] frequencies or they tell me to go directly to Kenwood. Kenwood has then referred me to the very same dealer who told me to go up a rope. I'd like to legally purchase this software, has anyone had any success with any Kenwood dealers either programming their radios for GMRS or selling them the proper software?

I am fairly sure the reason they can't or won't sell it to you is that it doesn't exist; as it appears the radio is programmed manually (without software)

If you have the pamphlet that came with it, I think that will tell you all the options.

Good Luck

The TK-3230 is a "pre-programmed" radio, as in that it has a bunch of Part 90 business use frequencies programmed into it that you select using the menu options.

There is no publicly available programming software for that radio.

There -is- an option to have Kenwood program it for something other than the preset 64 channels it has. However, it'll require a trip back to Kenwood for option L-1077 ($25).
The radio does have both Part 90 and Part 95 certifications, as well as wide and narrow band capability, so it could be set up for GMRS.

But, why?
1.69 watts output. You'll have to send it back to Kenwood every time you want to change something.
There are better options out there if you haven't already spent your money yet. If you haven't, get a radio that can be programmed by yourself. As you start off in GMRS, you'll find that your needs will develop and change. That usually results in wanting to change how your radios are set up. Having to send them to Kenwood each and every time is going to get old really quick.

But, your money, your choice. Looks like a decent little radio. I think you'd be happier with something a bit more flexible.

They're selling the Kenwood programming software, but if you buy that software for $150 you'll get a message that you're missing a USB security dongle that must be installed for the program to startup. Kenwood changed the product authentication from something you know (IE serial number) to something you have. And you can only get the dongle directly from Kenwood. I'm stopping into a local distributor tomorrow.
