I don't know how it happened, but I broke my old BC245XLT this morning, and one thing leads to the next and I'm finally back at this forum...after 15 years. Time really flies by.

Good to see some old names, and a lot of new ones.

Thanks guys! Glad to be back; so many new technologies, a lot has changed since the last time I tried to learn something new.

Welcome back!!!
Thanks!

Welcome...again (y)
Thank you.

Hey, welcome back. Any plans to replace that broken BC245XLT?
Yeah, definitely, and thats what lead me back to this forum. There are so many new offerings from Uniden now; just doing my research to see whats good. Initially when I got the 245XLT was primarily due to its trunk scanning capabilities so I could listen to some GTA agencies, but they've gone the encrypted route for a long time now, so will probably get something basic.

Are you in Ontario (Canada)...any specific questions?

Dave
Thanks Dave! No specific questions (for now); just wanted to say hello here. I'm based out of the Toronto area though.

Welcome back.

You say you want something basic, well to be honest with what we're dealing with these days you already have something basic. While I understand your interest in public safety. There's still lots out there to listen to if you're interested.

There's still your typical analog stuff, all the other stuff has gone digital. But digital you can still hear.

My personal suggestion if you want something in todays terms of basic but still enjoy the hobby. If I were to compare with what you have. Might I suggest a BC436HP and get the DMR and NXDN upgrades. I wouldn't worry so much about the EDACS digital upgrade.

You'll still be able to listen to OPP, Toronto Fire/EMS, and a whole other slew of stuff that utilizes the DMR and NXDN digital modes.

Given you're in Toronto, there should be nothing short of something to listen to on any day.

Welcome back.

The cheap route would be an RTL-SDR dongle ( approx $20 to $30 ) and some free software like DSDPlus, Unitrunker, and SDRSharp. You will be able to decode many digital formats, for a fraction of the price of a new scanner.
