Hey y'all, I am going to WCU in the Fall and I started to program an SDS File for the future and I was wondering if anyone in the area had any updated info on what the county uses or if the county db is as close to fully updated as it can be.

Congrats on heading to WCU while I admit I have nothing to add here I'm sure you will do a great job updating any database info once you arrive.
Thanks for the congrats! It means a lot to me! I'm going to try to do what I can to get the area updated. I've got 4 years to do so!

Do you have the DMR upgrade for your SDS? WCU uses DMR.

Congrats on WCU! I graduated in 2016 and worked for campus EMS my whole time there and county EMS for a while afterwards. Jackson co is primarily on Analog with some dispatch information simulcast on the NXDN. They are running mixed mode with most departments including EMS still using analog primarily. WCU campus does use DMR though a single site. Last I checked, campus PD was of course their own entity with dispatch and EMS was still dispatched by campus but if a call went through the county 911, it would be diverted back to the campus. I wouldn't worry too much about the NXDN upgrade yet but make DMR the focus. Cherokee reservation does use NXDN as well in VHF and you'll hear some localish stuff on VIPER too.
Awesome I'm glad to hear! And I did see that WCU was updated today so I went ahead and reprogrammed my WCU favorites list. I'm glad you were able to provide some insight on the county itself too. I don't think much will've changed in 5 years but so much around the world has already changed in a few months so... But I'm going to try to get up to the campus before I move in so I can look around again, spend time with a couple friends who are up there and try to poke around the air space

Pretty much all of WNC is on the database accurately.
For WCU you should be able to here all the surrounding counties as well. With out much trouble.
As you have already noticed there is heavy use of DMR/NXDN/P25 in the mountains.
Lucky the only encryption you will find is the buncombe co sheriff's office and all of henderson co.

2002 WCU graduate......Master of Public Affairs. I travel throughout the western part of NC. Lots of good stuff to listen to. More and more DMR. Make sure you have a VIPER capable scanner
