I was wondering if you or someone can explain something with the CNYICC system. If I add Jefferson county to my scanner would that make it so I can listen to they other counties in the CNYICC. I'm not familiar with trucked systems. Also is there a tutorial out there that would explain it a little better. Thanks

No - it doesn't work that way. Some talk groups can be heard on systems of adjoining counties, but most talk groups are not carried by other counties. Geography is also a factor when trying to listen to talk groups from distant sites on CNYICC. It is unlikely that you will hear Oneida County from Jefferson County.

Okay thank you. I’m starting to understand some. Then how is it that as a Paramedic in Jefferson county we are being told we will be able to talk to our units in Jefferson from Syracuse on a portable. I’m just trying to understand a bit more. Thanks.

I would guess that some of the EMS radios are able to communicate across CNYICC. That surely doesn't hold true for the majority of the talk groups. The individual systems would be saturated if they repeated every talk group across the CNYICC.

If the talk group was authorized for multicounty roaming, then yes, an authorized radio can "drag" that talkgroup into another county. The system knows which county the radio is registered (affiliated) to. Then anyone listening to that TG in Onondaga will hear it too as a side-effect...until such time as the paramedic leaves Onondaga County and then the system will stop carrying (broadcasting) it in Onondaga. As R0am3r said, if every TG from every county was carried everywhere regardless of need, it would overwhelm all the counties.

Just some generic background that is applicable to all trunked systems. Scanners are passive devices they can only listen to what is broadcast. Subscriber radios are active devices, the register and request system resources. System talkgroup behavior is programmable in the system. Talkgroups can be restricted to a single site, roamed by request to multiple sites or forced broadcast even if no subscriber is requesting that group on a site.

Since caygua, Oswego, Onondaga, Madison, Oneida and Jefferson are all on the same connected radio system there will be a policy for how to contact hospitals and other units across coverage boundaries. Other than selecting the right channel, it's seamless to the end user. For example E-wide will seamlessly roam from one county to the next as you drive down I81 without you having to touch a button.

Do units contact hospitals on this system as of now? I've never seen a TG for such operations.

Oswego Hospital and Community in Auburn have talkgroups listed in the database. So it would seem the answer is it depends. I know that comes as a shock <grin>

Any talkgroup activity on the Jefferson cell yet? Seems awfully quiet, even with COVID-19 possibly grinding testing to a halt.

If no one has caught any yet, there will likely be some intermittent activity over the next several weeks.

Thursday 5/21/20:

TG 45056 was simulcasting 46.1800 Fire ch-1
TG 45104 was simulcasting 154.755 LE ch-1

Several "regional" talkgroups were coming across the system as well (Event tacs, MMRS & Park Police)

FDMA

05/24/20 didn't hear a peep on the system.

What is the status of the system? I have been getting some reception in Rochester the last few days with early morning ducting. DSD+ decodes the CC but no chance of tracking due to co-channel stuff on the voice channels. I am getting occasional hits on TG 1 and a few on TG 7 only.

Not much has changed since May. Its currently broadcasting all the regional talkgroups. Including Onondaga County Fire 1 & EMS 7. I haven't heard anything more on 45056 & 45104. I have it scanning on my G5 with a wildcard set. I'll update if I hear anything more.

Next time I go to Clayton I'll have to put that system on ID search. See how often the sheriff is simulcast

Tue. 7/14, TG 45056 was not simulcasting 46.180, but there was chit chat between firefighters on there. Sounded like 1 of the units was from the Northpole FD.

Onondaga Fire 1 & EMS 7 are also roaming on Jefferson County towers as well. ALL regional channels are coming through.
