You can always setup your own closed/private repeater and spend all your time telling people they aren't allowed to talk on your repeater. The air will be clear so you can talk to yourself at will.

I think you'll find that in many areas that "break" is used for breaking into an ongoing conversation with emergency traffic.

Most areas would prefer that you use your callsign or a portion of your callsign to interrupt a conversation.

I find it a dubious claim that they were talking for 15 minutes on one conversation topic. :D

Around here, that would drift to at least 10 topics including HOA rules, personal medical facts (i.e. talking about your most recent colonoscopy), politics (speaking of colonoscopies), local sports teams, whether or not the city should build an arena, where they would put it, if the club should put a repeater on it when it's built, what modulation to make it, who has the best digital mode, "by the way how does my radio sound" (even though you're hearing me through the repeater), etc. It's like hitting "random article" on Wikipedia and then clicking on related articles - you could be trapped for hours learning about stuff you have no interest in.

I feel the same way, I dont even know why I got a ham radio and my license. By me its pretty much all a bunch of geriatric old farts who are about to stroke out talking to whos left of their buddies who havent died yet about there doctor appointments that theyre going to be going to all week. They dont want to talk to anyone other than their buddies. Its called USING A TELEPHONE if your not going to entertain talking to new people. They are such a bitter bunch of old hags.... Im 24 and I think the next youngest person on ham radio is 71 ..... seriously though, the next youngest person I talked to was 45. No wonder ham radio is dying, because everyone using it is a bitter old jerk who hates technology and the world.. All this chatter about "the new radios" and how everyone who got there license recently are like ...less human or something... the only time they stop yapping and complaining is when they change their diaper. i have had some really nasty people come back and be like... YOUR NOT BILLY !???? and then they just dont answer you . if your not going to talk to random people just use a phone... i had my license for two months and there have been 2 people who were pleasurable to talk to... oh i cant forget about everyone and their brother talking about old radios ....my old radio was the best... and the tubes and the this and the that...i am thinking about getting a mototrbo radio and trying digital. im thinking that may weed out about half of the death bed crowd because of the fancy computer gizmos that are involved with using it. then again i dont know if i want to waste any more money just to talk to a bunch of miserable old hags.

Ok... here goes...

First off, I'm 32, had my license for 18 years, so I feel I can accurately respond to the previous post. Not bragging (Ok maybe a little) but as a young person turning into a semi-young person in the hobby I feel my opinion is worth something here.

If someone calls another station and the other station answers, just butt out. You don't need to get a word in, you don't need to criticize on or off the air, you don't need to get mad. Unless you're a moto(or other commercial part 90 radio) guy, your radio has a vfo. USE IT.

I've had more interesting conversations than I can count and learned more than I would have if the radio was just shut off. Sure, there is a fair share of people talking about the colonoscopy or their trip to the phlebotomist. It happens.

Find other young people, we're out there. Two of my friends are former YHOTY winners. Who do you surround yourself with? Around here, the are 10 guys 40 and under who are heavily into public service and that is Cleveland alone.

Get out more, get on the air, quit complaining and do.

Great advice KC8ESL.

The bottom line is it is RUDE to break into a conversation if one has nothing on topic to add. Think about it. It's no different than getting on the internet and hijacking a thread and derailing a discussion.

If one has nothing to add or doesn't need assistance, then just be quiet and listen. You may learn something from the old timers.

Speaking from someone who has had his ham ticket since age 9 (will be 40 this year), I know it can be frustrating to find people with common interests. They ARE out there. May not be on that repeater, but that's what the VFO is for.

FWIW when I took my novice back in 1986 I was the youngest one, only kid in the class, and the next younger dude was 32 at the time!

Quit talking about it and be about it.

If there isn't anyone talking about things that interest you, start the topics on a different repeater, put up an Echolink node, try DMR/NXDN if it's in your area, HF...

its really not a matter of derailing their conversation its just the fact that they use the radio like a telephone and talk on the repeater at the same time every day and dont include anyone but themselves. and yes thats why im going to go digital to try to avoid these living fossils

So what do you have to add to the QSO? Why should everything be about you?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just pointing out you come across as selfish. They are enjoying something lawfully and sharing with each other.

You sound like a child who is prancing around the grown folks table pouting because the grown folks are having grown folks talk and you can't relate.

and yes thats why im going to go digital to try to avoid these living fossils

I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

how does my statement confer in any way shape or form that im asking it to be "all about me." you must be a geriatric old hag yourself... typical like 90% of the ham radio crowd. and yes, i cant relate to prostate exams and doctors appointments everyday because thankfully im 24 and im not a dried up old turd. i dont know why people defend these types... this is why new hams get discouraged because why should they put effort into trying to talk to people who dont want to talk to them... its not free. you have to buy radios and spend time and money all to get ignored by old hags using a repeater like a cellphone. i dont mind people using the repeater for 15 minutes like the o.p. said . i dont care if they use it for 6 hours ...but dont just ignore other people who try to enter the conversation. people use it and talk about personal matters between the two people like they are on a land line telephone its just ridiculous

15 minutes? Really..... Some conversations in my area can be an hour or more. HOA's are one of the better topics to discuss on amateur radio in my opinion. Sure beats medical conditions or how much rain you collected today. Consider yourself lucky.

Your choices are to just listen, chime in if you can, switch frequencies, or turn off the radio entirely.

Perhaps your clear disdain of the elderly is why people ignore you. I would ignore you too with that attitude.

I'm 25 and I've certainly had to deal with being ignored, patronized, and even insulted on the air. It's not just the older folks, it's the younger entitled brats too.

Just pity people like that and deal with it or find something else to do. Crappy people are all over the place, especially in wireless mediums.

Because you're complaining that someone else is having a conversation that you don't find relevant and rather than just moving on, you obsess and focus on it with loathing for people you don't even know.

you must be a geriatric old hag yourself...

Yeah if 39 years old is "geriatric" that means I'll be in hospice by 50. I guess to a 12 year old, 39 does seem "old"

yes, i cant relate to prostate exams and doctors appointments everyday because thankfully im 24 and im not a dried up old turd.

I guess a few years ago (2000) when I was 24 I knew it all. But the difference between you and I is I respected my elders and Elmers. You clearly do not.

this is why new hams get discouraged because why should they put effort into trying to talk to people who dont want to talk to them...

With a piss poor attitude like you appear to have, no one would want to talk to you. Calling people names, disrespecting their elders, whining because a couple of OMs are actually USING a repeater which would probably sit idle for days. You are right, why would anyone want to make an effort to talk with someone who is so blatantly NEGATIVE 100 percent of the time?

its not free. you have to buy radios and spend time and money all to get ignored by old hags using a repeater like a cellphone.

Nothing in life is free. My repeater certainly wasn't. Everyone has to buy in. Your point is what again? A couple of guys don't want to include you in THEIR conversation and you're pouting like a 9 year old? Ridiculous IMO.

i dont care if they use it for 6 hours ...but dont just ignore other people who try to enter the conversation.

I ask again, is it THEIR repeater or yours? Did you pay for it? Why do you think YOU nor anyone who did not PAY for it is somehow entitled to utilize it or be recognized by a third party who you've already made clear you want nothing to do with?

As has been said before, there are usually more than one repeater available, why not go somewhere else? Or quit whining and put up your own? Then you can invite all the elite know-it-all 20 somethings only and have your own chat line. Sheesh.

people use it and talk about personal matters between the two people like they are on a land line telephone its just ridiculous

And there is nothing in part 97 that makes this inappropriate. So long as they ID when required, do not get obscene, nor use it for pecuniary benefit, PERSONAL communications are allowable.

I'll say it again since your attention span is short, don't like it? QSY. Put up your own machine, Echolink node, or whatever. You don't have any say so how others use their equipment, but you certainly do over your own. So get to steppin and quit whining.

I'm 23. One shouldn't be getting butthurt about the fact others are practicing their right of talking to whoever they want to talk to or even practicing their right of freedom of speech. Throw your call out, if they don't acknowledge either continue monitoring, QSY or turn off your radio.

You are defending these people and you don't even know the situation. I have talked to other hams when the hogs we rent occupying the repeater and they agreed with me that they got the same types of response from the individuals in question. It's not their repeater they are just some nobodies who use it all the time. My attitude towards ham radio is a product of the way people act on ham radio. Like I said before if you're just going to talk to one guy and ignore/be cold towards anyone trying to join the conversation, just pick up the Damn phone and call your butt buddy

All I am going by is what you have presented, which is your side of the story. Since I don't have the benefit of anyone else' perspective (like those discussed, or the repeater owner/manager), all I have are your statements.

It's not their repeater they are just some nobodies who use it all the time.

So my advice would be to reach out to the repeater owner/manager/trustee/club whoever is responsible and ask them for assistance. If they allow them to be there and operate, then you have no choice but to play along or go elsewhere.

My attitude towards ham radio is a product of the way people act on ham radio.

I would say your experience on ham radio is limited. If you are going to base your entire opinion of the hobby on what two guys do, then you have a very narrowminded view of reality.

Like I said before if you're just going to talk to one guy and ignore/be cold towards anyone trying to join the conversation, just pick up the Damn phone and call your butt buddy

Hey listen, if someone wants to put up a closed system and not talk to me, I won't waste my time with them. So long as they aren't breaking any rules, I have no problem with their existence and neither should you.

What you SHOULD do is what I did: put up your own system where like minded people are welcome.

Or just go back to FaceBook Messenger and waste time with people who don't really care about you...your choice. :D

4) Suck it up buttercup.

This.

Lots of good comments here. 15 minutes is not excessive, even on a busy system. I'd suggest the OP work on becoming one of those hams who are welcomed to join the conversation, instead of whining about the conversation on the internet.

Well, look at what the moderator woke up to.

Some of you need to take it down a notch or two. Enough with the "old vs. young" debate.

Fact: repeaters are, for the most part, private property. The repeater owner sets the rules. In the absence of written rules, the behavior that the repeater owner condones on the repeater sets the "community standard". If you don't like the conversation, turn the dial. If you truly need to use the repeater, politely break in and ask the parties using the repeater to standby for a moment while you quickly make your call and move on.

Imagine you are at a dinner party (I'll spare you the sarcastic comment about when was the last time you saw a ham radio operator at a dinner party...oops, I guess I let that one out). Two people you don't know are engaged in a conversation on a topic that doesn't interest you. Would you walk up to them, insert yourself into their conversation with an off-topic comment in an attempt to change the direction of their conversation? I wouldn't. You might. But, if you did, you'd be considered to be rude and inconsiderate and they probably would try to ignore you. Amateur radio repeaters are often the same way.
