thats why im going to go digital to try to avoid these living fossils

I'm sure your pocket sized LTE/GSM/CDMA digital device that you pay monthly for will fit the bill for this and you will be able to turn off than annoying analog radio of yours and enjoy the silence until someone calls you for a meaningful QSO.

Putting that sarcasm aside, this is what Amateur Radio is all about. I have a regular QSO every morning during my drive time with a few close friends and we talk about subjects just like what you complained about and there is nothing wrong with it at all.

The land of broken calculators.
I'm curious to know what the complaining stations have done to try to join the QSO or to use the repeater, if anything?

IME, if someone needs to use the repeater and it is in use, they will interject with their call sign, part of their callsign like the last 3 characters or "contact" ("Break" isn't used in these parts). Then if they don't want to talk but just use the repeater to make a call to someone else, they will say "I just need to make a call" to someone else and the QSO in progress yields to the breaking station, they make their contact and then let the QSO carry on and clear out. If they want to join the conversation, they will either add something relevant to the discussion or much like this thread, they will steer it into another direction.

Something tells me no effort was even made to join or to use the repeater.

"Call, please" or "May I use the repeater quickly?" works well, too. I think I'm getting mixed signals on what the OP wants out of life.

its really not a matter of derailing their conversation its just the fact that they use the radio like a telephone and talk on the repeater at the same time every day and dont include anyone but themselves. and yes thats why im going to go digital to try to avoid these living fossils

So going to something that supports private calling and private text messaging? That'll just mean you won't hear it while its going on...just because the radio doesn't hear it doesn't mean it isn't going on. In fact, you'll get busy channel error when you try to key on a repeater that has a private call going through it and just get a busy channel and it'll just frustrate you even more that you can't hear the conversation.

Did you ever stop to think maybe the reason they use it like a phone is because they predate cellular devices? Ever think about why we call voice phone in the amateur world?

the whole point i was trying to make was that SOME old timers throw out their call, you answer, and if you are not one of their old buddies, then they dont respond . thats all im saying, if you dont want to talk to everyone or your just looking to talk to that one person, pick up your phone and call them. obviously all you overzealous ham nuts are never going to get it the thread should just be closed.

mototrbo is not a cellphone **********, its ham radio

Mototrbo is not amateur radio, and I won't stoop to calling names like you did, but it is built on the DMR or Digital Mobile Radio European standard that is being widely used in North America and all over the world. Like the word Astro, that Motorola uses for their flavor of P25, it is Motorola's distinctive product name. Both of these technologies are utilized in Amateur Radio, but it is not Amateur Radio only technology.

You might want to do a little research before you go spouting off on a topic that you know nothing about....

And the nice thing about that is that there is considerably more R&D that went into them both. They tend to have much better forward error correction and a greater usable distance while still maintaining communication than other digital modes.

It's a free country and no one is holding a gun to their heads to pick up that mic.

Who cares if its not amateur only technology. Its only a "network of over 400 DMR repeaters in 38 countries with 11580 registered users" Seems like no one is interested. Except 11580 people. God forbid there is a change in technology that has been the same since the 1920s. Have fun with using analog only while the rest of the world changes around you and leaves you in the dust. Im not going to throw out my old stuff but it doesnt hurt to try new things . Thats the whole problem with the elderly ham community is because they dont like new people and they dont like new radios. If ham radio is going to live on, people have to accept new changes and new ideas

I find it interesting that a guy espousing the virtues of a digital voice technology lists 7 models of analog radios in his signature.

This thread is about repeater hogs. This thread is not about the merits of digital voice modes. This thread is not about hams who are not interested in digital voice modes. Please stay on topic.

In my unsolicited, but likely popular opinion,
this is not a thread about repeater hogs -
it's a RANT that should
have been deposited into the tav in the first place.

I also find it rather interesting that this poster is trying to "school" someone who operates a DMR MARC repeater system, among other professional digital LMR networks...this is hilarious. Please DON'T lock it just yet.

Enjoy

Well, I did the best I could reading thru all of Dave the OP's post, and I think he's misguided in his thinking.

Two guys on the air talking about what hams usually talk about, the weather, their latest ailments, and whatever else crosses their mind. Dave, you could of jumped right in and joined the conversation. You could of jumped right in and changed the conversation, hams don't care. They would of loved to talk to you about traffic on your drive home, or how the your back yard needs mowed, or whatever crosses your mind.

Repeaters are meant to be used. People posting they should of went simplex is flawed thinking to me. From my reading, Dave didn't need the repeater for anything.

Everyone is free to butt right in and join in the current conversation. Or butt right in and change the conversation. If you need to contact someone, any ham (at least in Metro Detroit) will cheerfully stand by, let you make your contact. But if you have no need for the frequency, and don't want to participate in the QSO, then just listen and enjoy the old curmudgeons whine about the topic of the day.

I've been laughing at the fact you hang around the forums long enough and you pickup some background on knowledgable guys. Half of the hams in this thread are either techs, dealers, engineers, or sales reps who make a living off of LMR.

you don't say! I always get a kick when someone comes along and tries to attack the true veterans.

There are many on this forum who were pioneering LMR while the O/P wasn't even conceived yet.

If they bother to LISTEN rather than bark bark bark like a little chihuahua, they might actually learn something from these "old farts and their butt buddies"

Save it for your own parents KD2IBK. Been a ham for two months. You got much to learn angry young man.

Go take a dip in that big pool your folks own and relax. Sounds like you're the one who is taking too much too seriously.

I have politely waited and quickly threw out my call and sometimes people have ignored me...LOL So far it hasn't discouraged me to not talk on UHF/VHF repeaters. Actually I have a TS-2000 sitting in my basement awaiting a antenna party. To the OP hang in there man!! Upgrade to general or extra and get a HF rig my call is AC2OY. I'll talk to ya about life, liberty, and the persuit of radio for hours...LOL!!! I hear guys in my area doing and saying crazy stuff on local machines one day I nearly spit out my cigar I was laughing so hard my neighbors must have thought I was nuts.
