Jersey City Fire Department is in the process of training all fire personnel on the P-25 trunk system. New portable radios are being distributed and reprogramming of existing radios are under way. There will be 2 analog fire ground repeated channels, I don’t know if they will be the same channels they are using now. No word on the exact date of the switchover.

You might have the NFPA advisory confused with analog vs. P25. I believe that NFPA has stated that fireground comms should be analog, not digital. And I know of several departments who, right or wrong, use repeaters for fireground comms.

Just as an FYI, here's what's contained in NFPA 1221:

9.3.1.4 A tactical communications channel shall be capable
of operating in analog simplex mode.

9.3.6.5 Portable radios shall be capable of multiple-channel
operation to enable on-scene simplex radio communications
that are independent of dispatch channels.

Those look extremely familiar... but NFPA is advisory only. It's use is considered best practice, but is not binding.

yup
Doesnt look like use of the simplex channels is required. The only mandate seems to be for the "capability" to use simplex. ( Like the "mandate" to have the capability to use P25 )

Next time you need a lawyer, tell him you have the "capability" to pay. See what he/she says.

My understanding in the original JC plan was they were going to do the following:

1) Operate dispatch in P25.
2) Create two new fireground channels which would be repeater channels in analog for fireground ops.
3) Old FD1/FD2 would be added (and infrastructure should be in place, just requiring optimization for simulcast) on these channels as additional capacity to the trunk system.
