Well, the other local LTR SMR's are gong to DMR, mainly MotoTRBO. JES & Sons has popped out a new license for UHF P25. Will be watching for that to pop on my radar, along with the other P25 changes in near future.

Who or what is driving these changes and are the really needed?

I know of Fortune 500 companies that still broadcast in the clear who are not the least bit concerned now or for the foreseeable future.

Are the radio manufacturers just selling fear?

If they are fearful of industrial intrusions then anyone with the money can compromise their system. It just makes no sense other than filling the pockets of shareholders of lying manufacturers or software companies.

Digital does not equal encryption.

Just because a radio user goes digital doesn't mean they are trying to hide anything. There are many scanners that decode P25 and there are software tools for decoding some of the other digital formats.

Apparently the original lic with P25 was an clerical mistake, modded, NXDN. So 2 moving to DMR (MotoTRBO), and JES & Sons is going NexEDGE. Will see if NX series radios pop up with a couple of friends of mine with SEALS Ambulance.
