Madspleen,

What base unit do you use for monitoring the new JoCo system? Would you recommend that unit?

OP100. Love it!

Thanks. It keeps me busy.

Madspleen,

What base unit do you use for monitoring the new JoCo system? Would you recommend that unit?

I am currently only using a Radio Shack Pro-106, which is a handheld. I have heard good things about the Radio Shack Pro-197, same as the Pro-106 except a desktop unit.

My goal is by the end of the year to have enough in the scanner fund to add a Pro-197 to my collection. Only thing that could make this purchase come sooner would be Shawnee, Lenexa and/or Overland Park switching Police operations to the new system.

Right now there are not that many agencies operating on the digital system that it is impossible to keep up. Right now, all I monitor on it is Fire/EMS talkgroups. I have all the other talkgroups programmed just do not monitor them unless there is something happening. Olathe and the Sheriff's Office are the only Law Enforcement using the digital system.

At this point there seems to be quite a bit of encryption being used on the new system, all of the secondary Sheriff and Olathe PD talkgroups are encrypted along with the obvious talkgroups like Sheriffs Office Covert Ops and Narcotics. Encryption on those groups like covert ops and narcotics is fine with me, I would think there would be more on there that could compromise Officer/Investigation safety. I do not understand encryption on the secondary channels where information like license checks and things like that are given. I have monitored those talkgroups/channels, when they were analog for as long as I have been scanning and I can think of maybe two occasions where I have heard anything that could pose a threat to Officer safety. The people using the various radio systems are smart enough to know that anyone with a desire to hear what is being said, can.

Speaking as a former LEO in three different states, we all make mistakes and say or do somehing at the wrong time. In doing so, we may be responsible for someone else or ourselves being hurt/killed. I completely understand the reason for encryption, I having been involved with scanning since 1967, when I was in the Marines in El Paso Texas. Having said all that, I am not really thrilled with full encryp
tion as a matter of course, but I fully understand why a department might do it. I sincerely pray that Johnson County and other local agencies do not go that route.

Joco p25

Okay... I've done quite a bit of research and am leaning toward the Pro-197 but was wondering if anyone out there is usin a BCD-996XT and having any problems with JOCO P25??

Or has anyone HEARD about problems with the BCD-996XT?

Does anyone have any idea as to when any other agencies plan on switching over to this system? I have not heard any testing on any talkgroups lately so I figure it is at least a little ways out.

I would like to be prepared, with a second digital scanner, when other agencies start switching to Digital. I have a hard enough time keeping up with Olathe PD, ECC Dispatch/Operations and Sheriff countywide, with one scanner.

Also, anyone have any idea on how much encryption any agency plans on using?

PM me if it is something you don't want shared on the forum. I hear things from time to time and can never remember who told me any of them. Weird. lol

So I went with the PRO-197 and am really not happy with what I'm getting. I have an external antenna mouted on my roof. With THAT antenna, I get intermittent bits bust mostly garble (on the non-encrypetd channels - Fire/EMS Main, Noth Zone Dispatch, Olathe Dispatch). I'm assuming this is because of the simulcast. With the included telescopic antenna, it is MUCH better but still cuts in and out SEVERELY and sometimes missing entire transmissions. I CAN get entire transmissions and sometimes reception is pretty good but I know I am missing a lot.

I HATE to give up my external antenna because I occasionally listen to aircraft band, Lenexa, Shawnee, and KCMO but it WILL NOT work with the Johnson County P25.

Is the BCD996XT any better?

Have you tried using the Attenuator when you are connected to the external antenna? With the different antenna that you are using do the signal bars fluctuate or is it a steady signal strength?

I have found that with my 800MHz rubber duck using the attenuator keeps the signal level steady even when I am in the car and monitoring the 700MHz system. I will have to play with my external antenna on the 700MHz system when I get home this afternoon.

It doesn't work well for the legitimate users when they are outside the County too. The signal bounces in and out to the point it's unusable in places where the old 800 system would likely work.

It's just one of those things you can't do much about. I have written that whole system off as totally nonmonitorable and deleted it from the base radios.

Yep - tried the attenuator on the external antenna. Didn't seem to help at all.

Sounds like Shawnee PD is getting very close to switching to this system. Been a lot of radio man testing the last couple of days. Tonight on his way to training, in KCMO Shawnee's K-9 unit 1250, tested with the Shift Sergeant along the way. Tested at I-70 and I-435 in KCK, I-70 and 78th Street in KCK, I-70 at the river in KCK, I-70 in Downtown KCMO, I-35 at Front Street and lastly on I-435 near Worlds of Fun.

Signal was clear and audible on my end at every check besides I-35 at Front street was extremely garbled. Did sound like they were having better luck with the hand-held radios over the ones in the vehicles. Barely noticeable difference but a difference none the less.

Also noticed some testing yesterday afternoon on Prairie Village PD 1 (TG 31401)

Wouldn't call it testing, just some microphone clicks yesterday afternoon, KHP Dispatch (TG 31501)

New additions to my list that I think I have nailed down what they are.

  • 30252 Med-Act Tac (used at old settlers days in Olathe and Training.)
  • 31160 Fire District #1 Admin. (Training and talk around)
  • 31015 Northwest Consolidated Fire District (Talk around)
  • 31457 Shawnee PD (encrypted) TG ID lines up with other Shawnee PD TG's

Still have a few that I am trying to narrow down who is using them.

How are the Buses with "The JO" numbered? When they call in to dispatch and that kind of thing?

Since about 11:30 Sunday night, every few minutes, on my wildcard TG 10 keeps showing up with "Tango 12" reporting either picking up or dropping off 1 at stop number.....

I would guess this is The JO and on the wrong talkgroup as no one has answered him the 4 or 5 times he has shown up on Talkgroup 10. I have never seen only a double digit TG be used on this system either... All that shows up on my display is Wildcard and TG 10.

Anyone?

Unrelated to that issue... I have heard a few LEO from different agencies (Olathe and Sheriff North) try to contact KHP Dispatch via TG 31501. Never hear anyone acknowledge the transmission. Which again makes me curious when any other agencies are planning on switching to the digital system? I can't seem to find anyone that has any idea or even a time frame that has panned out. Had several people tell me August or September for Shawnee PD and Lenexa PD in October.

Shawnee PD is still very much analog. It seems a few of Shawnee's officers have access to Digital Radios as I have heard the TG used kind of like a car to car talk channel. Have not heard any dispatcher activity, just random talk around between officers once or twice every few days.

Lenexa PD has made the switch to the new system as of this morning as well. Heard a couple test counts on Shawnee PD's TGs so it looks like they are getting close as well. Guess its time to start shopping a little harder for a Pro-197

Is that it??? :)
I'd love to hear some more feedback?

I have yet to hear North Zone dispatch. I do hear a lot of encryption. Is the fun over? I've been listening to the SO dispatch for the NE JOCO agencies since the early '70s back on the old VHF band.

I hear Shawnee use 31455 as "Ch.3" and I heard them use 31456 for some car to car traffic.

The digital on my 396T is not the greatest. I wonder if upgrading to the XT would make that much difference, given that its a multicast issue?

I think upgrading to an XT is probably a good idea. I used to have one and it was an incredible improvement over the T. I sold it before the JoCo system came on line so I can't tell you anything about how it works on that system but if your T model is like mine it's one step above useless due to the horrible sensitivity.

It really sucks everyone has switched to this monster of a system. I am unable to monitor any of them now at home or out in the car at work. I really hoped it would be monitored from a distance but it''s a mess once you get anywhere near the edges.
