A while back I thought there was a post or article that mentioned Johnston county was going
to budget some funding to switch over the NC Viper system. Is there any fact to this? And if
so when is this expected to happen?

Also been having data channels hanging on uniden 396T / 996 radios very frequently and have to hit the scan
to resume scanning. Not sure if this is a bug in uniden firmware or on channel interference, are any others experiencing this too? Only happens on the Johnston county edacs system..

It I recall the article.

Johnston County is looking at going to a P25 digital system. I don't recall a thing being mentioned about Viper.

This is in part due to their legacy EDACS systems doesn't have replacement parts available any longer.

They do in fact have a couple of TG's on the Viper System for interoperability.

Thanks for the info, I know I read an article on the net about funding the JC Radio System upgrade and guess presumed that they were moving to the Viper system from the EDACS. It looks like Harnett moved
over to viper from their Edacs. Harnett sounds great on viper and was hoping that Johnston would do the same. Must admit that the JC edacs system quality and performance is the poorest I have monitored, here considering using a 50ft tower and some lp directional antennas, near the JC / Wake county line.

Once again VIPER is not the end all, be all answer for everyone. My guess would be that Johnston County will migrate to a Harris P25 system seeing as how their existing system infrastructure is Harris EDACS.

Johnston County EDACS

Johnston CountyEDACS also uses a proprietary Pro Voice encryption that is not available on scanners. They will be switching to a Harris P25 system shortly while using VIPER for interoperability especially for Fire Departments.
