Joplin PD activity is encrypted roughly 85-90 percent of the time. It's been that way for 3-4 years or so. That created a nightmare when we were down there in 2011 dealing with the tornado recovery. You'll occasionally hear officers transmitting in the clear. Dispatch is on "full lockdown" most of the time. Fire and Medical, as someone else mentioned, is in the clear.

Hmmm... are you sure it's not 100% of the time? The reason I ask is because if there is a little I can hear, I should be hearing it, unless it's a firmware problem which Uniden suggested it *could* be, just to rule out other possibilities. I never hear anything at all, except for Fire & Medical on the P25 system.

RR Joplin database

I've driven through Joplin on IH44 & heard nothing on Joplin PD. Why doesn't the RR DB reflect which of the PD channels are mostly encrypted? I see several talk groups where the "E" is present; however, if there are more, don't they need to be added?

You're right... I think RR's Joplin database may need to be updated to correctly reflect which channels are encrypted and which are not (if any). I purchased a 436 specifically based on their data, and it appears most or all JPD channels are actually encrypted (unless the problem is due to a needed firmware update, but I personally think this is a very small possibility).

load the ksics system. I forgot the name of the site in Cherokee county.
mshp uses moswin. the closest tower from Joplin is the Granby tower. u should be able to monitor that site from Joplin without any problem. jasper county has just gone to a digital mode that cannot be monitored with any scanners.
I understand not wanting to listen to kansas but do not underestimate the need to have that loaded considering our location. they do an outstanding job during severe weather.

I can hear MO Highway Patrol out of Springfield loud & clear (not sure how that works since they're 75 miles away). They must be using a repeater tower more nearby Joplin.

Jasper County just went to an encrypted system too??!!! Jeeez... I can't win for losing around here...

You're correct about monitoring Kansas especially during Spring/tornado season. I don't know how to specifically probram them in since I'm a beginner, although I guess I could just enter nearby zip code for Kansas and let the 436 program it...

Why not try to build the P25 system on the scanner to eliminate any database issues.....

Joplin Public Safety (P25) Trunking System, Joplin, Missouri - Scanner Frequencies

Enter the two control channels (Red & Blue) then do a ID search, or enter TGIDs from RR that are PD.

Well that sounds like a good idea if I could just figure out how to do it. I haven't made it very far in the manual yet and now that I know Joplin's system is encrypted (being able to listen to local Joplin calls was the whole reason I bought the radio), I'm thinking I may just return it. Now I find out Jasper county went to an encrypted sytem too. I dunno... I'll have to think about it. In any event, I haven't made it that far in the manual yet re building a P25 system.

Yes it is near 100% of the time. I scan in search mode and listen often. I rarely ever hear JPD.

Like mentioned above, you will want the West Mineral tower for Cherokee County, Ks. It is very busy. You will hear KSHP, Cherokee County Sheriff, Labette County agencies, KDOT, among others.

The MSHP has a tower near I44 and I49 near Carthage. So will hear it in the clear most of time.
If you get the MOSWIN Granby site it is worth loading. Covers a pretty wide area.

If your in Joplin you may have luck with monitoring the KSCIS tower in Cherokee County and the MOSWIN tower in Granby.

The KSICS tower is really busy. You can listen to Labbette County, Cherokee County, KSHP, among other agencies.

You are getting Joplin Fire and EMS aren't you?

Well as I've said in other posts, I'm just a beginner so I don't know how to monitor specific towers. Maybe I'll be able to get to that eventually in the manual...
And yes I'm getting Joplin Fire & EMS. At least I think I am anyway. I hear some calls, but it just seems like maybe I should be hearing more from them. I dunno... maybe there's just not too much that happens in Joplin.

Having a scanner is a piece of mind for me. There will most likely be a time you wish you had it. Im speaking of weather and disaster events. There is still good stuff to listen to. Newton County is a very busy department and fun to listen to. But I see your point if your partial to police and local stuff only. Always fun to take on vacation too.

It could be 100% now. Last time I was down there and physically monitored the Joplin system, PD had some traffic in the clear, but a majority of that was from officers.

Just fyi... I finally did hear a couple calls from Joplin PD just a few minutes ago.
If the whole system is supposed to be encrypted, I wonder how a few calls slip though??

I have wondered that also. Maybe post that question under its own thread.
