Sounds like they are transmitting from a portable. Also sounds like they're in a big auditorium.. like a school cafeteria. (I doubt that's where they are at.. but that's the only thing that came to mind to compare it with.)

Do you think they've already started the upgrade previously noted?

I caught word today that Joplin Communications Center has moved into the evidence barn while they renovate... for a few weeks.

Only when I'm not in town ;)

My wife is from Joplin and we try to get back there once a year to visit family.
I usually bring my Pro-96 and BC-780XLT with me.

I was beginning to feel that way myself. I actually live in Barton County, but have to travel to the Joplin area daily. Since I spend much of my work day inside a metal building, I don't get a good signal from the Joplin TRS. I usually end up having to listen to county stuff.
I do get to hear some of it (Joplin) during lunch, and on weekends while visiting family and friends. Actually heard the dispatch about the bank robbery yesterday as I was going to lunch, in fact.

Welcome radioscan and steener!

It's good to know there are a few more ears listening to Joplin and other areas in SW MO.

Has anyone heard any details on the new digital system that's coming to Joplin? I'm assuming they will be sticking with Motorola equipment. But are they planning to keep it open or follow suit like some of the other agencies around the country and encrypt everything, and really be able to keep the public out?

I assume they will stick with Motorola. I haven't heard anything else about it.. but it sounds like they're going to try and have the new system in place by the end of the year.

Foster_006:
Is JPS doing the upgrade that will require "Rebanding" of scanners that is discussed on RR?
I work in Joplin but haven't located a scanner to use in my car until lately. That said, are there frequencies to monitor that are better than others?

I'm not sure actually. I have been super busy lately and haven't had much time to find out what they are doing.

As far as frequencies, they should stay the same.

My information is VERY old, but the radio engineer told me back in 2003 that Joplin would be having a digital upgrade in the future. I've heard rumblings as recently as a year ago that the city was evaluating their options but definitely would go with an APCO-25 system. In 2004 a Joplin firefighter informed me that future communications would have to be interoperable with area FDs since the Joplin and Springfield FD (which are on 800 trunked) host the SW Missouri Hazmat team. j c

Actually, to clarify a bit... They don't share a team between themselves, Springfield has their own team, and Joplin has their own, which are both also HSRT's (Homeland Security Response Team's).

Each HSRT also has a law enforcement and an EMS Element, in fact... there is a third team with 800 capability that comes into play here also, Logan-Rogersville Fire (Eastern Greene County / Western Webster Co) also has an HSRT that plays in the Troop D Region as well.

Each team is supposed to back the other up on incidents, according to the last word I heard. (IE: Incident in Joplin, Spfld and/or LR are coming to assist).

Another thing that I heard from some of the Greene County people, there was talk about putting a tower somewhere near Mt Vernon (In Lawrence County) to allow some interop between the systems, don't know how far that has went, as that was about a year ago that I heard about that, and my source for that retired... :p

That said, the Greene County System can be heard WELL OUTSIDE the county. Have heard mobile units make it in from Lake of The Ozarks area, have personally heard the system on my truck radio just south of KC (Harrisonville area) and can hear it on my personal portable inside my residence in Lebanon. When I'm working in Springfield, I have only found one place that I cannot get portable coverage in, and thats because its in the middle of a hospital... ;)

All in all, they did the Springfield system good for coverage, I can only hope that they do Joplin as good. :D

I stand corrected; the fire department officer did say that they were HSRTs. He just gave so many examples of spills and plant explosions and how they would affect the multi-county area that I assumed he was referring to hazmat operations.

If the same person handles Joplin's communications as I met in 2003, then the system will be very sound. A former Jasper County 911 director told me in 1999 that Joplin's system was set up very poorly back in the 1990s. Later on, Joplin hired a different trunked manager, and he did a lot to improve the system, notably getting additional frequencies to handle all the METS traffic, which he said overloaded the system. j c

Don't know if you have been watching the Kansas forum...

The KASIS system, which is a statewide 800 MHZ Project 25 digital trunked system- is coming online in southeast Kansas. Would be neat to have interoperability with Joplin... It would even be possible to link the systems so that Joplin officers could talk from western Kansas back to Missouri (don't know why they would want to- but it is a neat idea).

Does Missouri have a statewide system in the works too?

Well, there is very preliminary talk about MSHP putting together a statewide 700MHz P25 system, not sure how all that is going to go over... If I'm not mistaken there is a RTT from Troop D / Springfield on here that might be able to give a little more insight...

At the 2006 Crisis Communications Conference, hosted by SEMA, a MHP comm employee told us that the state was awaiting the permission from the FCC to set up a 700Mhz band. He noted that Missouri was the only state in the country that did not have any TV channels (either in-state or bordering) that would interefere with a statewide 700Mhz system. j c
