• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

We mount our equipment in the Jotto Equipment Console designed for the Ford Explorer. I contacted Jotto and Curt tells me that they have been sending out their 425-6297 faceplate for the Uniden 996. All well and good, but the width measurement for the scanner is larger than that of the faceplate. If any colleague has relevant experience with the mounting of the referenced components, please advise. Thank you.

Good News and Bad.

The good news - I got a jotto-desk faceplate for my 996. It fits pretty darn good as I was tinkering with it over the weekend. I'm a fussy person, but I'm happy with the fit.

The bad news - I'm at the office and the faceplate is at home.

I will write down the model number and send it out in the morning.

The faceplate I have has "6297" painted on it. In checking Jotto-desk's references, the opening is 2.28" x 7.28".

When I ordered this thing I talked to Jotto-desk's help people and they recommended this one.

does it fit the DIN sleve? I'm thinking that I'd like the 996 to be DIN mounted in there so I can pull it and use it in the house on occasion (I'm too cheap to buy TWO DIN scanners).

ideas, anyone?

answer:

The faceplate Tessco sells (and Jotto recommends for this application) fits the 996 in the opening, but the holes are NOT set up for the normal mounting screws.

Holes can be drilled for the normal mounting screws.

BUT
the DIN sleeve fits perfectly, and if installed properly, enogh of the rim tabs can be bent out to put the radio on a significant enough angle to actually READ the display form the driver's seat.

If i can find a thick piece of trim and hot glue it in place, i'll be thrilled.
