Hi
I live near Albany, NY and just purchased the 996t undien digital scanner. I want to mainly be able to receive Albany, New York PD and Colonie NY PD

I am so used to just programming in numbers on a conventional scanner but this is so different. What if any software program should I use to program the scanner. Is it much easier that way or does anyone perhaps have any suggestions

Many thanks
Mark

Your best bet is to try them all and pick the one that best suits your needs. The Uniden UASD is free with your model, even if you don't use it, it has all the preloaded data stored in it.
The 3 that allow you to use your Premium membership and download directly from the database are
ARC996 from BuTel http://www.butel.nl/ free to try pay to keep
BCTool http://www.bctool.org/ is freeware as is FreeScan http://www.scannow.org/
As I said try them all out see which one works best for you.
I have used all 4 on all my scanners and even though I don't own the 996 the BCT15 is very similar, I use ARC15 simply because I'm more used to the BuTel software.

Additionally, ProScan and the Trunkstar products works with the 996 and has the RR import function. Those links and more can be found here...

Mark I believe all of these can accept .usd (the data file format used by the UASD) as an import source. Apart from using the web service to program, you can ask folks for .usd files and you'll also be good to go.

[edit] Our wiki article on the 996 has several useful links that will help you out. In the related pages section is the Easier to Read manual link - far and away better than the poorly-written Uniden article. There are also a couple of 996 related articles there.

The UASD and FreeSCAN are the only ones I have used with my 996 so far. The BIG advantage of the FreeSCAN over the Uniden UASD is that FreeSCAN allows you to copy and paste entire systems over from the Radio Reference database. With the UASD, you pretty much have to manually type in every system and talkgroup. VERY time consuming and frustrating.

No matter which you use, you're in for a long, frustrating, hair-pulling learning curve, so settle in and be patient.
