Thanks ... but I think we are missing something, as there is no serial port on the HP.

I know very little about it .. but I do know that something does not look 100% right.

Actually - the USB is a serial port, built in serial/USb converter. That is , for sake of argument, the only way you can communicate NMEA.

What I really wanted to say .. there is physically no 9 pin Serial connector on the home patrol .. so how do I hook it up.

I imagine a 9 pin serial to usb adapter is available ?

If I remember correctly, Uniden changed that GPS slightly, in that it now includes the correct cable that would plug into the HP-1 (or one of the other GPS capable scanners, such as a 396XT). At the time I bought mine, it did not have the extra cable, but I already had several from other scanners.

See the same item on ScannerMaster, which does mention the extra cable as included.

Ok thank you .. that makes a lot more sense now.

As this image (http://www.scannermaster.com/v/vspfiles/photos/10-501530-4.jpg) shows the GPS input on the scanner. Here is the cable input (http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/scanners/2620.jpg).

The link I provided includes everything you need for the HP-1, no additional cables needed, no matter what "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" might say. Some others vendors may NOT include the cable needed for your HP-1 as older stock of this did not include it, I found that out the hard way.

I think the problem is that the picture did not show all that was included .. ie, the 9 pin to USB accessory cable.

I will make sure that I get both cables.

It was a little confusing when I went looking as well. This was originally used exclusively on marine radios for
position plotting and Uniden then adapted it for scanner use.

When I originally purchased mine from a well known scanner dealer they were selling "new old stock" that did not include the needed BWZG1844001 cable for the HP and other scanners. They wanted another $20.00 for it but failed to disclose this fact before ordering. Returned it and ordered from Amazon for less and their stock included this cable. Only reason you might need to purchase this cable is if you decide to try other brand GPS puck like a Garmin.

The HP-1 (and HP-2) has a physical (non-USB) serial port. It is the little square port next on the side of the scanner labeled "GPS". The BC-GPSK comes with the correct cables to plug into that port..0

Well I'm a little late to your thread edmscan... Looking to compare notes; how are you making out with the HP-1?

I love it over all .. it is performing very well.

I am still trying to decide on my favorite lists .. but I am managing just fine.

I have a new antenna (Larsen TriBand) coming .. interested to see how that works out.

With a good antenna (anything is better than the stock ant), I found the HP-1 does very well, receiving as well as the other scanners I have with comparable antennas. I spent a month in the hospital two years ago. Had my HP-1, with an SRH789 antenna on it. Performed very well, getting most of the systems in my metro area (DFW).

I am using a Larsen 2/70 right now .. it is doing well, but I listen to 700/800 a lot, so I wanted a better antenna for that.

I am hoping the Larsen will fit the bill on that.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the HP-1

Just started using a Larsen 2/70 this week. My county is VHF-hi and the adjacent county is UHF. The issue has been UHF which is a fringe signal for me. So far the 2/70 is performing well in this regard.

Still for future reference I'd be interested in the performance of the tri-band. Would like to know if your VHF and UHF remain as solid as with the 2/70 with hopefully no diminished results.

Virtually no 700/800 use I'm interested in my area that will change over time.

I had a good time with the favorites lists- had to do this while visiting the folks in NC awhile back since I'm a MAC guy. So mI've been editing on the fly manually. However I recently bought a used Dell laptop for use with my 1080, HP-1 and radar detector.
Did not use the zip code based feature.
