I'm wanting to mount it on same pole as a tv antenna is on (rarely use it but was wanting to keep it up just incase sat. goes out). How far away should they be from one another?Or would it be best to mount the scanner antenna else where ..like the chimney or possibly the attic? The outside pole isn't no more than 8ft above the roof line so don't think there will be much difference between attic and mounting it on the pole..thanks

Should be ok.But how tall is the total length of the existing tv mast?(the scantenna fully assembled is about 10ft),so you don't want it touching the tv antenna elements.

Also,if you want it to live long, and prosper,Get one of those cheapo fiberglass bicycle flags, take off the flag, and run it along the VHF lo (longest element)and tape it every 6 inches. This will reinforce it in the wind.

Mine has been up for a few years now and has been through 60mph + winds and has yet to bend or break.

Had a "microburst"(collapsing thunderstorm)a couple of years ago,80+mph winds, and the low band element did bend.I have since reinforced mine, and have not had anymore problems.

Also,it was up on a tower about 40ft.

The scantenna is made of lightweight tv antenna tubing, the manufacter now claims to have produced a heavier duty version.

It's still a good tip and the next time I pull it down I will do the mod. Now that I said that though I bet we get some high winds that tears the thing apart :)

Plus, they are pretty easy to re-build after wind damage. If you can find someone with an old tv antenna that they don't want anymore.

Actually, you can almost build an equivallent to a scantenna out of an old tv antenna CHEAPLY!(I have done this before)using a little thought, and some aluminum "L"brackets for the two "><" on the VHF band.
-just need to get the measurements on the elements.

Those insulators have been known to crack apart.

I rebuilt one(scantenna) that was destined for the junkyard that way.I did drill out the rivets, and replaced the hardware with some stainless steel nuts/bolts.

TeRayCodA TV Antenna Conversion

TeRayCodA, can you give a detailed description of converting a TV antenna to a scanner antenna? I have a brand new one in my attic that is just laying there waiting for something to be done to it. I have tried to find something on the internet about but no luck yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.--Gary

Mount it sideways and you have a scanner antenna.
