I live in the Wappingera area in New York. So I can hear ZBW and ZNY traffic pretty well on some frequencies.

My question is with sectors. Are they remote TX and RX sites or is there physically a Air Traffic Controller at that site?

ARTCC freqs are mostly at remote sites (RCAG Remote Center Air Ground site) throughout the ARTCC airspace. It is not unusual for radios to be at the ARTCC building as well, IF it provides a good location for a particular sector.

Some terminal facilities will have remoted radio facilities as well.

I'm a bit south of you in Northern NJ and c an tell you I programmed in ALL ZNY frequencies and hear 80% of them on a regular basis. I also programm in all the CT frequencies for ZBOS and get 60% of them on any given day do some experimenting. You'll never know what you hear!!
