Back in the day, that's just what hams did, not go to HRO and buy something off the shelf...

The circuit probably has the same structure for the vacuum tube days, where trying to use as few vacuum tubes as possible was a key design constraint where another transistor (nowadays at least) isn't that big a deal.

I just wish obtaining/grinding custom crystals were easier, but then again frequency accuracy is much more of a constraint today for other reasons...
