Kansas City Council members last week urged the city staff to continue pursuing a public-safety radio upgrade — and said they would figure out how to pay for it later.
“It’s a critical need,” said Councilwoman Deb Hermann, chairwoman of the council’s Finance and Audit Committee.
Assistant City Manager Rich Noll told the council Thursday that radio towers and other critical infrastructure are aging and system failures pose a grave risk to firefighters, police and the public they serve.
The cost of the improvements to eight radio towers and other equipment is expected to run about $30 million to $35 million.
