I have family in Smith county and they just did a purchase order for all new law enforcement radios on the system. Their take on it was that all the LE channels are going encrypted but it's possible it's all Phase 2??

The strange thing about all this is they gave all the old LE radios to the fire department, if it's phase 2 then they won't work. Does anyone have any insight on this?

I visit once or twice a year so like to listen to that area.

I know Larry Lambert. I'll ask if he knows anything.

Old radios will still work, they will just take up two talk paths.

Here and there
Its pretty common now majority of Trunking systems come with phase 2 tdma etc enabled but aren't using the feature. Since its the future you can bet they'll have the features for if they need it later on. Too many assume these features are impossible for their town to get in modern times.

Look at the bottom of this page KSICS

There are new requirements coming out that radios going on the state system must meet.
Encryption capabilities are one example of those requirements. It is a capability, not a definite implement.
While there continue to be talks of encryption throughout our communities, most radios just have to be capable of certain features and functionality.

I grew up in Smith County and have talked to folks there about this
I believe because all the Fire Departments are still using VHF, and Sheriff/Law/EMS are on 800, they are wanting a better way to be interoperable.
When I was up there earlier this winter, they had guys using 20+ year old VHF radios and Dispatch many times had to be caught in the middle of relaying information.
