First is an old picture from back around 1999 showing my Scanner/Ham radio install in my Fort Tempo. The photo was taken in the parking lot of the Fire Department where I volunteered. The photo also shows the Whacker lights on the dash and the portable scanners I kept for scanning multiple agencies.

These pics are of my most current install in my Chevy Lumina. Shown are the usual scanner/hamradio install with 2.4 gig wireless video receiver wired to the 5inch color TV.

Of course, the installs keep changing. Here's what the install in the car looked like about 6 months ago. I still use the Laptop for APRS and other functions.

I started in CB radio and scanning around the time I was 12. Here I am in my shack as a young teen with my base CB and 4 channel scanner.

Stupid question: What is the purpose of having 10+ handheld scanners? A person can only listen to one at a time, correct? If you're taking a trip across town how do you decide which one to take?

It does look cool and impressive but what about practicality?

A. Its a hobby that can become an obsession, and you always want the newest and best.

B. Different radios offer different features, IE close call, trunking, alpha tags, CTCSS/PL.

C. It is possible to listen to more than one radio at a time, I do it all the time.
One radio is running fire, another ems, yet another police, and maybe one
with local towing.

D. HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS, WINS!!!!!!

With a little practice it's easy to use multiple scanners, perhaps parking one or two on Talkgroups associated with an ongoing incident, as to not miss anything, while searching for new talkgroups or frequencies that might only pop up during "big" incidents.

For instance - I'll park scanners on both Fireground and Fire Command Talkgroups during a big fire AND scan for the local police. I might also put a scanner on the local helicopter unicom and listen to the news choppers jockey for filming positions and describe the scene.

It gets complex quickly, but it's doable.

Actually a scanner can only listen to one transmission at a time. When a major incident occurs I stop scanning and lock a scanner on each talk group or frequency that is being used. In a hostage situation, the snipers have their own TG or non-trunked frequency. You only have one chance to hear the incident commander give them the "Green Light" to kill the bad guy. It can easily take five or six scanners to cover all the different groups.

A couple of months back my 1997 Lumina was totalled out when a distracted motorist in a Tahoe doing 60mph slammed into a line of us stopped at a red light.
So I figured it was time for some updated photos. This is what my mobile looked like after the wreck.

Since the wreck I've been using my Spousial Equivalent's car. I havn't installed any scanners but still carry my Pro-93 in the car. I swapped out the Radio Shack 2meter mobile ham radio that my lady used with the Kenwood TM-D700 dualband mobile I use for APRS and crossband communications. I attached the Magellin GPS to the back of the remote head mount so it can see the sky. I slide the mount under the plastic separation on the top of the dash to mount it. When I park I slip it out and leave the display and GPS on the floorboard out of sight and mind.

The dash cam was used when I was a volunteer fire fighter/EMT. I would activate it when leaving the driveway and turn it off upon arriving either at the station or at the scene depending on which I was going to. We are authorized to run lights and sirens on our POVs here and sometimes we'd get complaints of reckless operation from the public or other complaints. My dashcam was a witness that I wasn't driving in a reckless manner and was following all department guidelines. The cam was reponsible on at least 2 occasions for proving that I was not at fault after a citizen complained to our department. Some people simply had issues with us responding code 3 in our POVs and took every chance to make it hard on us.
I have not been a member of the volunteer FD for almost 2 years and so the video camera was not on the dash when the wreck occured.
