Waay back in the early 80's when I first got interested but not yet even licensed I bought two rigs - a Yaesu FT-901DM and a KDK FM-2030 both of which served me well for many years with many pleasurable contacts all over the world on the 901 and locally on the 2030. But one thing led to another and I sold them both off in about 2005 - but the interest was still there which I continued with SWL-ing and another 2030 which I bought on our local auction site which has been going well for 5 years or so. BUT it's suddenly developed amnesia and no longer retains it's memorised frequencies and has gained a mysterious "8" as the lowest frequency digit. 5 minutes of investigation showed that the 3.6v rechargeable nicad battery was useless and it's terminal voltage dropped to below 1volt as soon as the power was removed. I have a replacement on order but as an experiment I substituted a 1F 5volt capacitor (yes - Farad!) which took about 15 minutes to come up to voltage . I have now programmed in the local repeaters and their offsets but that pesky "8" is still there - for instance I have programmed 7.125MHz into Ch1 and 6.525MHz into the offset but both displays show 7.1258 and 6.5258. Huh? there is no control that I can see that will change that '8' into a '0' like it always was. I've been hunting through the on-line and printed handbooks and found nothing about a 'power on reset' or anything like that. Over the weekend (it's Friday!) I will unsolder the capacitor and remove the supply voltage and see if the memories completely disappear.
SO - has anyone had any experience of this nice little 2m FM rig and now how to reset the display, the pll or the microP? Any help gladly received.
...and a happy, prosperous and virus-free 2021 to all!
