A friend has asked me about what scanner to get for local monitoring of police and fire. I haven't been an active scanner listener for a long time and I'm not up to speed on the nuances of the various systems. I am a tech and know about trunking, etc.

So what systems are they using in Keene and what is required to listen? Apparently there have been radio upgrades rendering this person's old scanner ineffective.

Well I'm way up in Littleton, and I'm not sure if Keene area is in a trunking system or not but 99% of the state's Police departments have gone to P-25 Digital. So a digital scanner would be in order, I'm in the market for one myself as my old Uniden isn't picking up much for police radio. I'm looking at either a Radio Shack Pro-96 or Pro-106. The GRE models are really nice too. I hear the Unidens are decent but RadioShack/GRE seems to be leading the way in Digital Trunking scanners

Thanks Jason. I confirmed today that the Keene PD is using a P25 digital system and that Keene Fire changed frequencies earlier in the year. I also ordered a Uniden BCD996T on behalf of my friend. Best price I could find before I got tired of looking was from ScannerMaster in Natick, MA, although tonight I got an email from Uniden and they have a like-new BCD996T for a bit less -- $475.

Don't you hate when you find something cheaper after the fact. I hear good things about that unit, hope your friend likes it!!
