I was wondering if out in the elements, how would I keep my SDS100 at a comfortable temperature range (Manual said not below 50°, but here in NWNY it’s in the 20s and 30s, any tips, tricks, or suggestions to keep the scanner from being damaged due to colder temperatures?

Hi, here up north Canada, in even colder temperatures, I keep my scanner either in an interior pocket with volume nearly at max, or in an exterior pocket of my winter vest/jacket. Spare batteries always in interior pocket.

I don't know what could be damaged in a scanner from cold. The display reacts more sluggish and the battery shouldn't be charged while too cold. But there's nothing in the scanner that I know of that can be permanently damaged.

The stuff in the manual is "common sense" type stuff. I'm sure the radio will be just fine, they just put those figures in the book so that *if* the unit is damaged somehow in the cold, they can't be held liable for it because... "it says in the manual".

When Radios get cold items like the plastic cases get brittle. The same for the 'oil' on control knobs etc. Antennas also get super stiff. The opposite things happen when they get really hot. Mobile units suffer from these extremes as they are outside 24-7. I have also seen alignment drift due to very low or high temperatures. This drift is not noticeable on strong local signal but weaker signals suffer.

Don't forget that modern solder pastes with no lead are brittle. And look at the connector issues.
It's a wonder that anything lives long in temperature extremes these days.

Ok thanks guys for all your information, I was just concerned with the temperatures here hitting single digits once in a while, and are normally around 20s to 30s and rarely over that except for here and there once every so often and just wanted to inquire with the more knowledgeable members here along the forums as I am just trying to make sure I don't damage the unit out of my own stupidity and neglect.
