It all depends on the radio. That's a great setup there for the 996T. I'm mainly using PSR-500's now, and use Win500's capability to use object #'s up to 99,999 for organization. I have a block-sequential setup in this mode, although the objects are renumbered when the info is loaded into the radio. However, that capability really helps me to keep my scanlists organized. I also force my first 23 objects to be used as titles for my scanlists which will appear as I scroll through then left-to-right. (much like the remark field in computer code)
I also try to keep my programming's set up in a consistent way, so no matter v-scanner file I load in the radio, I'll basically know my way around. Scanlists are usually as follows:
0 - Unassigned - this houses all objects that are not assigned to a scanlist. It can be a good location for items that you'd like to be able to scroll to manually, but don't want to have in your regular scan.
1 - State conventional
2 - State trunked
3 - locality or region
4 - locality or region
5 - locality or region
6 - locality or region
7 - locality or region
8 - locality or region
9 - police surveillance, federal LE, emergency mangement,
10 - Fire/EMS dispatch, other emergency agencies (drawn from the regions in lists 3-8)
11 - Scratchpad - radio is programmed so all new finds are automatically sent into this scanlist
12 - Security search - various low power, MURS, FRS, itinerant, local control
13 - Mutual Aid
14 - Rail & Marine
15 - Private security & other on-site systems
16 - Aircraft
17 - SMR's and other commercial trunking
18 - Scratchpad for federal systems & sites, airports, military bases, etc.
19 - Wildcard objects for all governmental trunked systems
20 - Local Government (non-public safety)
21 - Favorites - items which can be scanned to the exclusion of all others at the push of a button. Items can be added to this list with a single keystroke, and the list can be cleared quickly in field conditions.
22 - Skywarn - scans items to the exclusion of all others, but doesn't have the quick 'add' and 'clear' features that "Favorites" offers.
On older scanners, up to the PRO-96, I organized channels numbers in a block-sequential manner so that I'd know where to go when I needed to. In the old days of 10-bank scanners, it'd go like this:
1 - State
2 - Business/Low Power
3 - Local Control
4 - Rail/Marine
5 - Local Police
6 - Military air
7 - Local contol (mobile side)
8 - Aircraft (civilian)
9 - Scratchpad
0 - Local fire/rescue
In both configuartions, I like to keep standard air, marine, low-power, mutual aid, etc. All ready to go, so all I have to do is add the local stuff for where I'm going. I also like to have a lot of preprogammed lists & ranges to search for security guards.
