Kent: Surcharge possible for 9-1-1 upgrade

Kent County officials have just about written off the idea of a central emergency dispatch system, at least for now. Their new plan will improve the efficiency of the area's 9-1-1 service.

It's an improvement. At least different agencies will actually be able to talk to each other.

Yes it does suck. I already have a 911 charge on my phone bill for Kent County. They need to add a surcharge on every cell tower in the county too. They have to have land lines also, how else can John Doe call Jane Doe and tell her he is on his way home, so she can make sure her boy friend isn't there. And how many cell phones call 911 in a 24 hour period? Next thing you know the county is going to pay some consulting firm to do a study on how to better the communications in the county, then they really won't have any money to make the system better.

Law enforcement can do that already, it called County Wide, and I hear MSP talking to GR PD all the time on VHF. When I lived in Ohio, the county I lived in, all the fire departments could talk to each other. Maybe all the departments in Kent County should apply for a grant and go to MPSCS.
