To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

There could be a number of issues here, and narrowing it down will take some work.

To start with, where did you purchase this radio from? Was it a -new- radio, or did you purchase it used?

What is the full model number off the back of the radio (under the battery)?

What version of software are you using? Not just KPG-160D, but what revision?

Read the radio and let me know what firmware version it is, too.

While these radios do come pre-programmed, they are programmable via PC. However, there are a number of variations that play into this here that need to be considered. Answering the questions above will help me narrow down the probable cause.

Radio Firmware 2.06 is the latest version, January 2016, so you are good there.
The "K2" at the end of the model number means its a US market radio, which is the big issue I see with people buying radios off e-Bay, they end up with radios from other countries and the US programming software won't work with them.
KPG-160D is the software you should be using. Version 1.05 is the latest release.
You might want to call Kenwood or your Kenwood dealer and get the latest version of software. You'll need to provide the serial number from the version you purchased.
That may not be the issue, but off the top, it's a possibility.

Other issue could be that the radio itself isn't what it says it is. The "ProTalk" radios were pre-programmed and had a different firmware. I worked with a guy a while back and we were able to load the non-Protalk firmware into his radio and make it work, but I don't recall the specifics.

First step is to make sure you are running the latest KPG software.

The 3400U16P is one of the radios we use at work. With the radio and software combination I have, I can only choose frequencies from a drop down menu. No direct entry is allowed and the Help screen states that this is the case. Are you stating that you can't select from the drop down menu or that you can't perform a direct entry?
