I agree. You can beacon all day long but if you aren't in range of an iGate you'll never show up on aprs.fi. Here are a few other things to check:
1. Are you sure that you are actually transmitting a beacon and on the right frequency? I've seen some folks that have their radio set for either a + or - offset instead of simplex so their APRS beacon wasn't actually transmitting where anyone is listening for them. In the US, nearly all APRS beacons are on 144.390 MHz in simplex mode. Tone is not important so for most folks it should be turned off on both transmit and receive (when traveling some advise setting a 100.0 tone so others can call you after seeing your beacon and have you move to a simplex frequency to talk.
2. Is your radio set to APRS12 and properly configured for APRS on the side of the radio set for 144.390 MHz? There are several important settings on the radio's APRS menu that will prevent packets from being sent out. One of the key ones is "My Callsign" which if left blank will prevent the radio from transmitting APRS packets. Verify that all values in APRS menu are set correctly. There are YouTube videos on how to do this as well as several "how to" web pages that will be helpful.
3. Make sure that the radio's GPS has a good lock on the GPS signals. The radio will not transmit beacons if not locked (or your location is hard-coded into the radio). In the upper right corner of the radio's screen you should have a blinking GPS to indicate that you have a good lock on the GPS signals.
4. Check out this thread on RR (
Kenwood: - Kenwood TM-D710GA Will Not Beacon Out | RadioReference.com Forums) that discusses this exact issue and provides many things to check and verify. It has helped others get their D710GA to work on APRS and hopefully it will help you as well.
Good luck!
