Hytera and Motorola have their own version of single frequency repeat in which a radio can do a skinny mesh mode by receiving on one time slot and repeating it on the other time slot. Hytera only puts the repeat function in one of their portables while motorola uses it with a single frequency extender device or a repeater. On motorola subscriber unit you have to do split color codes: 1 for Tx and a different CC for Rx. There is more involved since the suscriber units can talk direct when out of range of the single freq repeater and then when they come into range they go through it seamlessly without interruption (I don't know how that works). I realize that my NX5 radios cannot do split CC so will not interop with moto extender or split TS for hytera. I ask all this because last week one of the captains in our state wide task force was quizzing me about it. We were in fact talking over the radio so we didn't get into any detail but I realized he wants to use that capability going forward. I thought I'd ask some questions here before I get pinned down by him later on. Since they deploy to all kinds of emergencies it is easy to see why having ability to use a portable or mobile radio instead of full blown repeater (duplexers etc) would be extremely attractive (even lifting unit with one of their drones). The TF unit near me is already buying some Kenwood gear with my encouragement and statewide they are buying DMR radios (don't know the numbers) including some chinese radios for hand out cashe radios (this I did not encourage even though as a taxpayer I'm sensitive to what my state spends!). I hope after this pandemic the chinese manufacturers are on everyone's s... list. I for one will not be recommending hytera even though at the moment their solution might be the best. I guess the hytera must be able to "split" Tx and Rx time slots but I don't actually know. Anyway, this capability is not going to disappear so I'm wondering if Kenwood has any plans to implement some version in their radios? I believe it would require only firmware to make it happen with existing hardware.
