• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I completely understand dealers only, and am in no way trying to purchase from someone that is not legit. I'm located in California and I am unaware of any local dealers so my only option it to look towards the web.

Zane, where are you located? I'm in California and purchase from a number of various Kenwood dealers for work. I'm also on good terms with the Kenwood Factory Rep.

Any Ham friendly dealers? I understand not wanting to post prices, but if so about how much discount? You can PM.

Has anyone heard of them planning to make a 7/800 MHz mobile in the 5000 series?

Wow, so you could have VHF, UHF, and 800 all on one head? That would be something I could only dream of.

Motorola doesn't even have a tri-band mobile option... that insane!!! Is there anywhere you can sign up for updates from Kenwood directly?

And 700MHz.
Not a bad setup. Analog, P25 I/II, NexEdge/NXDN, VHF, UHF, 700/800MHz. All in one control head.

The only gaps they seem to have at this time is no 900MHz RF deck and no low band RF deck. Probably not much call for 900MHz, especially with all the rumblings about some level of "rebanding". Low band would be nice, but they still are marketing the TK-690's. Also, seems to be many public safety agencies like 100 watt radios, but I guess the TK-5x10 series fits that market.

I've also heard rumors that a DMR capability is being considered. If they did that, they might be able to finally push Motorola over once and for all.

I'm spec'ing out a couple of NX-5700's for an application here at work. Was looking at the NX-700 since we are already using those and the NX-900's heavily, but it's hard to not justify the extra $100 or so to get the option to upgrade to P25 down the road.

Maybe a personal one is in my future, but I'll likely wait until my old CDM-1550 wears out.

That color display looks pretty awesome! Haven't seen an APX8000 in person, but I'd say the NX5XXX series display outdoes Moto APX portable/mobile easily. Now if I could a) save enough funds and b) find one affordably NOT on ebay etc.

Yeah, I was looking at them at IWCE the last two years. I've been waiting for an appropriate application for them.
2 years ago I had our PD replace their aging MCS2000's with TK-5710's. They really liked them and I got a few positive comments about the better audio.
The application these NX-5700 will be for is the parking enforcement trucks. They are part of PD, so I'm sure I'll be getting some questions about them from the sworn officers.

You would give the meter readers cooler-looking radios than the officers? That won't make you very popular. ;)

Yeah, exactly. I expect to get a call about this...

Truth is, the bigger control heads on the TK-5710's work better in the police cars. Easier to use while driving. Bigger controls, bigger display, etc. I spec'd the bigger control heads specifically for them trying to work the radios while in pursuit.

If I ever purchase one of these for my own person use, I'll upgrade the control head.
Parking guys will get the basic control heads, they don't need much else.

Ok, I know there's been a lot of talk about the different options and what-not for these radios. So, here's my question....

Am I able to purchase and activate the different options at a later date than when the radio itself is purchased? I'm gathering that this is possible, but wanting to confirm that this is the way I'm understanding it.
