• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Not on the NX-5200, but I've used them on NX-210's and TK-5210's.

The KRA-25 works marginally better than the stock antenna. It's got a tiny bit more gain, but not a huge amount. Trade off is that it's a tiny bit narrower in bandwidth if you are using for amateur use. Our officers used those on their NX-210's for years, and other than the annoyance of the longer length, they were durable and gave us a slight edge over stock. Only had one shorter female officer that kept her KRA-26.

I've used the KRA-28, and it seems to perform the same as the KRA-26. Obviously more bandwidth, which is great if you are using the radio for ham use. But it's a stiff antenna and only the top half is ~sort~of~ flexible. Not something I'd want to carry on my belt.

I think I've been using the KRA-26 most of the time. Just not a huge performance difference.

I use the KRA-28 for ham (wide banded 140 to 170), the KRA-25 is more for the railroad (high end VHF)
My tests with them has been about .5 dBm better than the 26m (stock antenna)
For what it's worth, if you trying to listen to far away stuff, you have to take it off the belt
and hold the radio like the training manuals show. (just saying)

Trying to get idea, my fire dept, has Kenwood Nx-5200 radio's and having some issues with radio's hitting the repeater.
1, you will get more complaints with the pogo stick than the 26m
2, need to consult with the local radio shop or dealer that services the repeater and let them know
3, take it up the chain of command if you're not getting anywhere (politely that is)

* edit
4, need to look at getting a VRS to use the engine radio when on scene, that is specific to the main channel and not fire ground.

Ok, height little bigger not much.

I used to use a KRA-25 (It's actually a Kenwood packaged Centurion EXH-155-SFK) until I was handed a Larsen SPWB22150. The Larsen performed overall just as good as the KRA-25 but it covers the full 136 to 174 and is a bit shorter, the down side is the cost. I also had a EXH-160-SFK for railfanning, but the Larsen also seemed to work just as well. Now I use a KRA-47MB :) but that is not on my 5200.

Or as Evans mentioned you can look at an vehicle repeater. We have done dozens of in-band Pyramid SVR's over the years and they work very well IF set up correctly. Shot me a PM if so, we have SVR's in both of your north and south neighboring counties.

I agree with Evans.

We had some places where our VHF repeater didn't cover very well. The higher gain portable antenna did not fix the issue. It just made the places it was scratchy, a bit less scratchy. The 0.5dB improvement that Evans reported sounds about right. 0.5dB isn't going to fix anything.
