To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,
I'm hoping someone on here can answer this question for me. Can you swap the logic boards from an NX-700 into an NX-800 (or vise versa) without major problems, or would it affect to many things in the radio? The reason I ask is because I have both a 700 and an 800. The 800 has the latest firmware (which includes MDC-1200 encoding/decoding), but the 700 has older firmware which does not. Just wondering if I could simply swap the boards and end up with a 700 with the latest firmware. Thanks in advance!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.4; en-us; SCH-R720 Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

Simpler, yes. Cheaper, no. Since i really dont want to pay kenwood for the firmware, and cant seem to locate it on the web, and since i have an extra radio with the newer firmware, cracking them open and pulling the boards would be the better option, in my opinion.

I have the same problem. I have an NX800K that won't do MDC-1200. I've been trying to locate a firmware update for it but haven't had any luck yet. BTW, isn't the 700 a VHF radio and the 800 a UHF radio? I'm not sure swapping boards would work.

Im pretty sure that if its anything like the older motorola radios, the logic board and RF board are seperate, and can be changed if you realign the transmitter.

Flash ROM, for the firmware etc, resides on the TX-RX board which is RF specific and there would be no way to swap the board for what you want to do.

There is no charge from Kenwood for a firmware upgrade, just what a dealer would soak you for five minutes of their time. Bite the bullet and shop for an honest shop.

Actually, the problem just solved itself free of charge, so I'm good now. Thanks for the help!

We would be happy to help you in the Philadelphia area. Deal with these every day & even have fully networked Nexedge trunking that covers almost the entire Philly metro area-can talk from Center City to Dover, DE on portables & soon from Philly to the S Jersey shore.

Glad the problem worked itself out.

Here in So Cal, the authorized Kenwood service center wants $75 to flash the firmware. It literally takes 5 minutes to do but they want to charge their 1 hour minimum to do it. BTW, if I had proof of purchase that showed the radio was still under warranty, they'd do it for free. Without it, it's $75.
