• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Alright so a weird one for you all, I will start from the top from when the problem started.
I wrote my programming file onto the radio, radio worked fine and I was scrolling through my menu options.
All of a sudden the entire lcd goes black and now it's been stuck like this.

Here are list of symptoms:
- Radio LCD goes dark upon power on
- Radio LCD darkness disappears slowly upon power off
- Radio buttons do not function despite power being on
- Radio plays power on tone but nothing else
- Radio is not recognized by the kpg111D I'm using (version 5.21, confirmed that it wasn't kpg issue), can't read or write or enter test mode (shows "Check all connections and COM port settings" despite being on correct com port).

Here are what I tried:
- Flashing the radio with firmware version 5.22.00, the radio is able to enter both firmware version display and firmware update baud rate display, also shows battery diagram.

I can post pictures but it's literally just Nx210 with black display

More info:

Model: NX210 - K2
CPS: KPG-111D version 5.21
Firmware: went from 2.02.00 (something like that) to 5.22.00 (someone has already confirmed that the firmware version works with my version of kpg)

As of right now, I've pulled it "out of service" (really for volunteer stuff) and set aside, just looking for answers.

They may have rolled the NX210 into it more recently, but to the best of my knowledge KPG-111D is not compatible with the NX210. I have version 5.00 and the splash screen does not show NX210. Could the issue be improper firmware and software?

It's the right software. A NX210 is a NX200 with big buttons. uses the same firmware and everything. Programmed many of them with KPG-111d. Looks like OP has programmed this very radio with it.

I think they just left it out of the splash screen. The NX210 was for railroad workers. The NX200 has awful buttons the people who use DTMF need bigger ones. It uses TK-2180 Batteries I think too.

For OP. I think maybe a loose cable inside the radio? Are you positive that your version of KPG will read a firmware that new? To me, when the version number of the radio was higher than the Software. it was a automatic no for it working, or at least it got my attention to check. Your firmware matches your region for sure too?

Firmware 5.36, checksum 9965 - released 1-10-23

KPG-111 V5.30 released 2-3-21

Might be worth a shot, if its already broken you can't break it.

UPDATE: I FIXED IT WHOO HOOOOO
After several hours of head scratching, I decided to flash the radio with the firmware one more time.
The issue persisted, however I decided to just try to program the radio while holing P1 button so it's displaying firmware version but not the "black screen of death" (I'm gonna call it that).
KPG 111D was able to read the radio, I was genuinely shocked at that point and crossing my fingers I pressed write.... It worked
The radio is back to normal, thanks to everyone who helped!!! <3

Kenwood used to recommend that the radios should be in service with "firmware programming" box unchecked. Only having the radios with firmware programming mode turned on when you were about to update the radio. then disable it after.

Personally i never saw any issues when it was left on, but Kenwood was saying to not do that.

Which version did you flash it with. The latest firmware?

Kenwood only restricted that on new software. Was it a requirement? because I think only MOT and Vertex did anything to lock you out. Vertex checking your PC's date to see if Narrow is allowed still is my favorite method.

In Canada we just set out dates to 2012 and we will good to go.
