• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Kenwood NX5200 & NX5700 Self-Testing

Working on a radio project. The departments have purchased NX-5200s and NX-5700s with the AE31K encryption module and the 5100CV P25 conventional option. There is a 20 second self-test completed after powering the radios on. Using other Kenwood radios, the self-test is much shorter at 5 seconds. What is causing the lengthy self-test? There is no encryption programmed at the moment, so is the software searching for the encryption and causing the delay? Is there another cause?

If the board is installed, yes.
Without the board, even though SCM is checked, it will sense no board and continue bootup.
With the board it check integrity.

I’m not clear on your answer. Can you break it down for me?

I have 5300 and 5800 with AE31K that are not currently in use (i.e. there are no keys loaded) and they don't exhibit this problem.

I know NX-5300 doesn't do that with an AE31K that has no keys in it (at least one that was recently here that had yet to be keyloaded), regardless of whether there are channels programmed as secure or not.

Bluetooth and GPS come to mind. Is Bluetooth maybe looking to connect to something? Is GPS looking for a signal and the radio maybe configured in some way to wait for that to send a location squawk, before allowing user mode? You may be able to disable either or both through the menu on the radio. These radios are highly-configurable, so it's hard to say exactly how to go about hunting down the culprit.

Do you have KPG-D1N software or did your dealer program them?

Alright, those seem like plausible options to check. I do have the KPG-D1N software.

I've seen this after a radio got zeroized due to the battery going dead and not have infinite key retention enabled. Configure the radio properly and you shouldn't have an issue.

Winner winner chicken dinner! Enabling the infinite key fixed it. Power on the radio now, self-testing is gone, and able to use the radio 20 seconds sooner. Thank you.
