Kenwood NXR-5700/5800 repeater

Hi Guys.

Have any of you heard of a new repeater Kenwood are developing, NXR-5700/5800?

I logged onto the Kenwood B2B EMEA site to download some firmware for another model and was just browsing around seeing what new and came aross programming software KPG-D2 for NXR-5700/5800.

Has anyone got any insight into this model?

Although I can find no specific article for this repeater, given the direction Kenwood has taken and the model number, I can only surmise that it is yet another entry to feature analog and digital using their proprietary NEXEDGE...

...making it incompatible with other digital formats such as DMR.

EDIT: It may also be a repeater made to be compatible with their latest mobile entry with a similar model number, the NX-5700, which supports both P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2, as well as their own NEXEDGE protocol.

Those two were released in the US market on 29 December. Similar to the NXR-700 and NXR-800 repeaters with more memory and more processing power. Intended to be for the new NexEdge V2 release.
0.5, 5, and 25 watt output selectable.
Built in 0.5ppm TCXO unit.
250MB internal memory
SNMP protocol compatible
Digital Simulcast System Interface (shown as a TBD future release Q32017)

Not P25 capable, this is an analog/NexEdge repeater only.
KPG-D2NK is the programming software.

This data is from the Kenwood WebTools page, not available to the general public, yet. Stuff usually gets released on there first. It's intended for dealers and techs, not for the general public.

You'll likely see something hit the public facing pages in a few days.

It looks identical to the NXR-700, 800, 900, 901 repeaters with the addition of a USB 2.0 type B port in place of the DB-9.

While not listed, I full expect there to be a NXR-5900 800MHz version and a NXR-5901 900MHz version pretty soon. Kenwood did this with the original release of the NexEdge radios, VHF and UHF came out first followed by 800MHz and then 900MHz radios. A few months will probably show the rest of them showing up.

First of all, I will put it on the note here, WHY USB 2.0? why not USB 3.0, which is now a standard. AUGH. Afterthought and no accountability here, oh well. I am submitting my PO for KPG-D2K wide band tomorrow.

Yeah, at least it's better than a DB-9. I think I'm one of the few guys at work that hangs onto old serial cables, adapters, etc.

True that McKenna, though I have to say, I am still using serial to program my NX-5000's.... (frog gagging).

Buddy of mine, has the KPG-46UM, and I can hit a 3 deck NX-5000 in under 3 min (in UART mode) total.

My serial took 12 minutes. (gag)

Our data center had some company come in to do some maintenance on one of their large UPS systems. The data center manager and the contractor came into my office because they realized no one had any serial cables and adapters any more. Luckily I had a box of stuff in my shop that they were able to pick through. The contractor was kind enough to never return them to me.
One of the nice things about being here is we have an "E-Waste" bin. I'll hit that bin at least once a week and pick through it pulling out stuff like that.
We've got one site with several labs. I checked their E-waste bin one day and discovered a complete HRO-60 with -all- the band modules.

Our first NX-5700 came in a few weeks ago. The nimrod at purchasing never ordered the software that was on the PO, so I'm waiting on that. This first one will be going into a police van. I think they are going to like the display a bit more than their TK-5710's. I suspect if I can get them off their "gotta have 100 watts" kick, I might be able to slowly switch them over to the NX-5700's.

As it stands, I've got 5 of the NXR-900's running for our trunked system. I've been slowly setting aside funds for a replacement of the system in 10 years. I'm about 4 years in with no issues. Still, going to NexEdge version 2 would be nice. Maybe in a few years.

Curious why it matters? One of the biggest differences between 2.0 and 3.0 is data transfer rates...which isn't a big deal for programming radios/repeaters.

Very big difference when programming one of these beasts with a serial cable versus the KPG-46UM usb cable.

I'm talking about the difference on programming with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, not serial. Why does it matter? The speed rates for programming a radio between the two are negligible.
