I have tried 3 different long wire antennas and all I can get is WMT 600 and 1600 KCRG. All other frequencies com up hissing. I tried all bands that this radio is capable of. Do I need a new radio or is it fixable? I have talked to several ham operators and they use nothing but a long wire. My old DX440 used nothing but a long wire and it picked up more than this Kenwood does. JIM

If the attenuator isn't on, the next thing I would suspect would be a blown front end (maybe the RF amps). It's probably going to cost more to fix it than it's worth, but I would try Kenwood repair (if they even have the parts anymore to fix it). That radio used to have a super-hot front end - so much so, you really needed to add some form of front end selectivity or attenuation to it to prevent overloading. With a little work on the filters and power supply, it would be a nice radio 73 Mike

I had a Kenwood R-1000 once. Your attenuator switch (upper right corner) might possibly be stuck. Try this:

Put the attenuator switch to 0 dB (off). Then jiggle it. Horse it a little if you have to. These R-1000 attenuator switches get sticky or dirty or something. Try jiggling it while set on 0 dB. If that doesn't put it back to life then ka3jjz might be right; that something needs to be replaced.

I also seem to recall a switch on the back of the rx betwen the wire antenna connectors and the SO239. Maybe that thing is bad or needs a little help to get into the right position?

I used to have one; this was my first thought too.

Some radios have a small light bulb in series with the antenna socket that acts as a fuse in case of close lightning. I'm thinking that might be it. I tried looking at on-line schematics but the ones I found are poor photocopies and I'm also trying to find where I read that, but again, not much luck. It's a thought. That's one HOT radio - I have one - well worth fixing.

Edit: the user manual for the R-600 (it's little brother) mentions that IT has a fuse in the antenna circuit. It could be cheap fix.

Just Checked My Drawings For My R1000. Sorry, No Fuse.

Signal Path Is > Antenna Switch (on Back), Then The Attenuator, Band Pass Filters, And Then The Rf Amp.

I Had Problems With The Attenuator Switch Getting Dirty On Mine..

Good Little Receiver Worth Fixing... Good Luck

I was borrowing one from my Father-in-law, the attenuator was dirty and if ya as they say "jiggle" it, it would come to life. We have a club member that is selling one. Message me if your interested.

I just fired up my R-1000 after 6 months rest. I have to jiggle the attenuator switch to get mine to work as well. Once I find a sweet spot, it works fine again. Time to open the case and clean the old girl up!
