Just bought one..awaiting it UPS. First time user for this type of receivers ( been into scanning since early 80"s), what can I expect ? Good receiver? Don't have an antenna yet, got a buddy to help picking out and install. Just curious what will open up for me DXing with this. Live in orange county NY. Have no real expectations for anything..just gonna sit for hours and find stuff. Just curious what I might find. Thanks.

This should be moved to the HF forum...it's a pretty basic radio, but not too bad. Certainly stable enough to be able to hear some of the HF utility stuff, and not bad on SWBC - but you don't want to put too large of an antenna on it, as overloading can be an issue.

bob1857, for antennas, take a look at our Wiki which has a lot of links for HF antennas and loops. Just click on the 'wiki' in the blue bar, and select 'antennas' from that first article. We also have extensive articles with links on SWL and utility as well. Lots to read here.

I have, and still use, a Kenwood R-1000. It's very sensitive, so it doesn't need much of an antenna to pull in lots of great stuff.

Have fun!

Mine is over 20 years old and going strong. Get a good outside antenna like the PAR EF-SWL , mount it as high as possible, and you will hear more than you can monitor in a lifetime..one at a time.

Google??? You must be nuts. As mentioned before our HF antennas wiki has the link for the PAR EF-SWL, a review from MT, and further down, the link on EHam for wire antenna reviews.

I think you'll find that the PAR antenna is very highly regarded - actually they all are (PAR sells ham versions as well). My next home is going to have at least 1 of them....

I had a Kenwood R-1000 for 17 years before I sold it to finance the IC-706MKiiG. Excellent radio that performed awesome with a random wire. I can only guess the R-2000 is twice as good. :D

Got the radio a couple of days ago. I have been using it with just a loop wire antenna indoors. What a nice radio, I did check out the Wiki regarding antenna and my friend also stated that the PAR EF-SWL is s good choice. Ordered it and it will be here soon, I hope. I can only imagine how much will open up for me with the right antenna. Thanks for all the advice from my favorite site !
