I've set to resolving the dots issue on my R-5000 by removing the potting compound or whatever that white stuff is around the VCO container. I've cleared the inductance coils and started to work my way back to the metal container.

Does anyone know how much of this I need to remove and which components specifically are likely to have been damaged?

The dots only appear when tuning across 5 and 6MHz and there's some pictures on my website showing the VCO container. https://hfaero.com/?p=3849

Yes Mike, but that stuff is there for a reason. In the case of a VCO which may be part of a phase locked loop, it is usually there to prevent vibration from any source, including the internal speaker, changing the frequency of oscillation. It may only be a few hertz but it may well be enough to render a weak SSB signal almost unintelligible. Tread carefully, my friend!
