I recently purchased a Kenwood d74a at a trunk sale and after sitting for about a month now the radio will only power up to the Kenwood screen and then powers back off and on again in a continuous loop.

Figured I had a bad battery of failed AC power supply, I just purchased a new (OEM) battery and desktop charger and have the same issue.

Anyone had similar problem before??

TIA

I’ve seen reports of that issue. Could be as simple as the radio to battery contacts.

The USB charging circuit has been a subject of several threads on the D74A owners FB page. After reading those, I charged the battery (not attached to the radio) in the drop in charger to avoid the possibility of an issue.

Sadly I have tried charging the battery (both the brand new and used Kenwood KNB-75L batteries) separately on the new desktop charger and still the same flashing Kenwood screen.

I have also tried powering up the radio with just the supplied wall charger and the radio will not power on at all.
(not sure if this was updated to the newer firmware allowing this function)

Checked the prongs on the back and although they seem ok, slightly bent them to protrude more. Same behavior.

If anyone has contact info on a licensed repair facility could they please share. Checking the Kenwood website only led to dealers not service facilities.
I may have read that since these are discontinued they may no longer be serviced by Kenwood (n)

First thing I'd do is contact Kenwood. If you are in the USA, their phone number and email address are:
(310) 639-4200 Option: 4, Option: 1
HOURS: 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. PST
kcc-amateur@us.jvckenwood.com

The only Kenwood authorized service center in the USA is:
FTH
KENWOOD AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER
20801 Currier Road
City of Industry, CA 91789
Phone: 626-333-2443

You may find other Kenwood service facilities that aren't specifically authorized by Kenwood.

Kenwood traditionally will repair radios for several years after they have been discontinued. The exception to this is that they will decline to service an item when parts are no longer available.

There's a contact form. Send them your info and they can direct you to a service center.

Being that these radios just went out of production and are apparently being sold for higher than new prices, that may be worth investing in getting repaired (ASSuming parts are available, you know, the AKM factory fire excuse, COVID excuse et al).

Have you tried a hard reset?

If not.. Hold down the F key as you press the power on. Hold them both for a second or two after the power on screen appears.

If things aren't too borked up, you might get the reset option screen. If you do get this screen and it stays on long enough, choose, "Full Reset".

If you don't get this screen or the action doesn't work.. Then I guess it's service time.
